What positions does Liverpool need to strengthen in the next transfer window?

Alex Dudley Alex Dudley

It seems odd to question the strength of a team 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League standings.

However, Arne Slot and his squad are under the microscope after crashing to defeats in the Champions League and EFL Cup final against PSG and Newcastle United, respectively.

A lack of quality options from the bench has de-railed Liverpool’s aims of winning a treble this season. The fitness and subsequent performances of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk raised questions in the recent domestic cup final defeat against Newcastle.

It could be a massive summer of transition at Anfield, regardless of what board members are already planning. The club still face the prospect of losing first-team stars like Salah, van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who are all in the final two months of their current deals.

But in which positions will Liverpool need to address when the transfer window opens?

Right-Back

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s likely departure and Conor Bradley’s injury woes throughout 2024-2025 mean a right-back will be a sought-after position.

Liverpool have always been shrewd in the transfer market, meaning that a big-money move for a player like Jeremie Frimpong is unlikely. An attractive target could come in the form of 28-year-old Ola Aina

The Nigerian has been a standout right-back in the Premier League this season for Nottingham Forest. He’s showcased his excellent defensive capabilities while providing an attacking output in the final third, with three goal involvements in 29 league outings.

Aina is out of contract at the City Ground this summer and has yet to put pen to paper on an improved deal.

Left-Back

If there’s been a weak link in the Liverpool team domestically this season, then it could be argued that Andrew Robertson’s best days are behind him.

The Scotsman recently turned 31, and while his performances have dropped, there are still few more complete full-backs in the PL when he’s at his best. However, the lack of competition in the area means that the club may cash in on Kostas Tsimikas in order to buy a more mobile and suitable player for Slot’s system.

Milos Kerkez has already been linked with a move to Anfield this summer, and he ticks plenty of boxes. The Hungarian is excellent defensively and has shown his attacking quality after scoring twice and recording five assists for Bournemouth in the league this term.

Central Midfield

The central midfield position was an area of concern when Slot took over at the club, and eyebrows were raised when no player was signed last term. However, the emergence of Ryan Gravenberch in the number six position has been a godsend for Liverpool this term. Additionally, Alexis Mac Allister has excelled in progressing the ball through the lines.

However, Dominik Szoboszlai clearly has limitations after registering just eight goal involvements from 27 league appearances. The club will likely look to add a younger player with similar characteristics to Wataru Endo in the summer. A move for a creative player in the number ten could also be achievable if Liverpool are able to offload Harvey Elliott

Morgan Gibbs-White could be a player who ticks plenty of boxes for the Reds. But the Nottingham Forest and England star may be too expensive for the Anfield club.

Forwards

Mohamed Salah has carried the burden of goals in the Liverpool forward line this season. No other player netted more than ten Premier League efforts in 2024-25.

Losing the Egyptian superstar will shatter the club’s chances of winning successive titles. Even if they’re to retain the forward, they’ll still need to sign at least one forward this summer.

A left winger of world-class quality is required, as Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo are both below the standard required if Liverpool is to challenge for honors on multiple fronts. Meanwhile, the club look set to cut their losses on Darwin Nunez. They’ll be one of many teams across Europe that are in the market for a striker.

World-class number nines will be in high demand this summer, with Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea among the English sides in the race. Viktor Gyokores has been linked with a move to Anfield, while Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko could yet be players to watch.
