Premier League 2019/20 Matchweek 28 Round-up & Highlights

Premier League 2019/20 Matchweek 28 Round-up & Highlights

We were treated to a spectacular Premier League weekend! Liverpool lost for the first time this season, Goodison Park gifted us with a glorious clash and Wolves crushed Spurs in London. Here is how the table looks after the sensational weekend of football:

Watford 3 – 0 Liverpool

Liverpool have finally lost and we still can’t even believe it. Not only did 20th-place Watford triumph over the would-be champions, but they completely dismantled Jurgen Klopp’s side. A double by the fantastic Ismaila Sarr and the winner from Watford veteran Troy Deeney sealed the momentous 3-0 victory at Vicarage Road.

44 games unbeaten. What a run. Onto the next one, Reds ? #LFC

Публикация от Liverpool Football Club (@liverpoolfc)

Arsenal fans can all relax now, Liverpool have lost a Premier League game for the first time since January last year, ending their unbeaten run at 44 games (the Gunners hold the record with 49).

Liverpool have looked worse for wear in recent weeks and on Saturday they achieved a single shot on target in the entire match. The table-toppers are not infallible; Atletico Madrid proved that in the Champions League and Watford have done it at home.

The stats keep on giving. Liverpool have conceded more than once in consecutive Premier League games for the first time since December 2016. Another one: Liverpool’s defeat was the heaviest suffered by a club in the top-flight table against a club in the bottom-three since November 1985, when Leicester beat Manchester United 3-0.

The scenes when this went in ? Goal number 6️⃣ this season for @t_deeney!

“Losing hurts. The records are only for the media, we didn’t even mention it once,” said Virgil van Dijk after the game. “We keep going, we want to win the next game ahead of us, that’s the FA Cup, and then we have Bournemouth at home. We want to strike back, we want to show what we’ve been doing the whole season. That’s the only way forward.”

Everton 1 – 1 Manchester United

The most entertaining clash of the weekend took place in Goodison Park as Everton hosted Manchester United for a one-all draw this Sunday, just as we predicted. A total of 30 shots, each side with five on target, with both clubs being unraveled by goalkeeping mistakes.

David De Gea hadn’t committed a fail like this in ages. He took his time clearing the ball and once he finally made contact the ball blasted straight into Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s sole and then into the net. It was embarrassing for the United keeper, to say the least, but it’s not like we’re shocked every time it happens. In the Premier League, De Gea has made seven errors leading directly to a goal in his net since the start of last season, the joint-most alongside Martin Dubravka and Bernd Leno.

The tempo picked up and a couple of smacked cross bars later Manchester United equalized when Jordan Pickford failed to stop a superb strike by Bruno Fernandes from 20 yards out. The Portuguese star has been directly involved in 19 goals in 21 league games this season for Sporting Lisbon and United (10 goals and 9 assists).

The feisty drama continued and Everton were not ready to give up just yet. They had a goal disallowed by VAR in extra time because Gylfi Sigurdsson had been lying in an offside position in front of De Gea, apparently obstructing his view. Carlo Ancelotti lost his mind and confronted the referee, which lead to him being shown a red card after the final whistle.

“It’s something that happens in football once in a while if you take too long on the ball, Ancelotti commented on De Gea’s error. “Calvert-Lewin always chases everything and it’s unfortunate that it goes in the goal. We responded and got the goal we deserved.”

Tottenham Hotspur 2 – 3 Wolves

Wolves came back from behind, twice, to stun Spurs in a five-goal thriller in London on Sunday. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men leapfrogged their rivals and now sit sixth, whilst Spurs have moved down to seventh place on the table. Check out how we predicted this game will go

Tottenham opened up the scoresheet in the 17th minute as Steven Bergwijn found the back of the net. Matt Doherty equalized ten minutes later when fired home a ball by the brilliant (brilliant, BRILLIANT!) Jota to make it 1-1, before Serge Aurier’s curler put Spurs ahead just before the break.

The Doherty-Jota partnership is the gift that keeps on giving. Jota equalized from close range from a Doherty low cross and Raul Jimenez scored the smart winner in the 73rd minute.

“I think unfair. The players didn’t deserve the defeat,” claimed Jose Mourinho after the game. “We were punished by, I would say, mentality mistakes. You have to be ruthless against teams like Wolves that plays fantastically well on the counter-attack.”
