Barcelona vs Real Madrid Preview and Team News

Barcelona Team News

Barcelona defeated Mallorca 1-0, dominating the match despite Hansi Flick heavily rotating his squad. Players like Hector Fort, Ansu Fati, and Eric García, who’ve featured the least in this campaign, were given a head start.

Most players impressed, even with the absence of a traditional striker. However, after a few opportunities in the first half, Barça returned to the dressing room at half-time without a lead. It took a goal from Dani Olmo in the 46th minute to claim the lead, as Barcelona ended the match with forty registered shots.

Meanwhile, renovation works at the Camp Nou continue. The lawn is ready according to Relevo. The club planned to move to the refreshed venue earlier this year, but the work wasn’t as fast as expected.

This is significant for Barcelona, as fewer tickets are sold in Montjuic, where they’ve played during the refurbishment. Besides that, the club marked up ticket prices, and fans have complained that the views in Montjuic have not met expectations. This was evident for the game against Real Madrid and Inter, where entry prices reached up to €800.

Marc-André Ter Stegen, who’s been injured for the majority of the season, is expected to start on the bench in the Copa del Rey final.

Alejandro Balde, Marc Bernal, Marc Casadó, and Robert Lewandowski remain sidelined with injuries.

Real Madrid Team News

While Barcelona are full of joy, the same cannot be said about Real Madrid. Their Champions League journey came to an end as they bowed down to Arsenal, losing 3-0 in London. This was followed by a 2-1 defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Rumours have circulated in Spanish media that head coach Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure will end this Summer, while some claim he’d take over the Brazilian national team.

It’s believed that Ancelotti has already lost the trust of the dressing room, which club president Florentino Pérez is aware of. Although the plans are to sack the head coach in the Summer after the Club World Cup, a shameful display in Sevilla could accelerate the decision.

Madrid defeated Getafe 1-0 thanks to an Arda Güler goal in the first half, which wasn’t enough to impress the fans. Indeed, Real found few convincing opportunities in front of the goal despite totalling over 60% ball possession. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois ended the game as the Man Of The Match.

Getafe won the xG battle, totalling 2.3, while Madrid only registered 1.5 xG. Real remain in the race for La Liga, four points behind Barcelona. However, Camavinga’s injury may be the final nail in the coffin. The midfielder has been ruled out for the rest of the season, including the Club World Cup in June/July.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Head-to-Head Statistics

The rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid, commonly referred to as El Clásico, may be the most followed rivalry on the Old Continent. The visitors lead with 105 wins against 102 for this weekend’s hosts. Both teams shared points 52 times.

These clubs last faced each other at the beginning of the year, during the final of the Spanish Supercup. The 5-2 victory marked the first trophy of the Hansi Flick era, despite Szczęsny being sent off in the 56th minute for a professional foul. This didn’t prevent Barcelona from winning, however, as the side entered half-time with a 4-1 lead.

Real last defeated the hosts a year ago, back when Xavi Hernández still coached Barça. The Catalans opened the scoring through Andreas Christensen in the 6th minute, but Vinicius Jr equalized in the 16th through a converted penalty.

Barcelona claimed the lead again in the 69th thanks to a goal from Fermín, but it took Madrid only four minutes to make it 2-2. When a draw seemed to have been settled, Jude Bellingham scored in additional time to make it 3-2.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Player Focus

Although many would point fingers at Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s unstoppable dribbler, Dani Olmo deserves recognition for his season. Many doubted the value of his signing due to injuries, but Olmo has been stellar, to say the least, when fit.

It’s true he still struggles with availability, but he has recovered quickly and reclaimed his spot every time he’s come back from injury. Olmo accelerates Barça’s attack from the advanced midfield, which makes him an excellent tool as a ball-carrier. It’s an essential profile for Flick, especially in the context of a high-pressure match like the Clásico.

Real Madrid should rely on Mbappé to tear Barcelona apart, as he may be their only chance of breaking through. His pace always makes him a dangerous asset, no matter the game. Mbappé has demonstrated his ability to createopportunities from thin air, especially in one-on-one situations.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Analysis

While Arsenal exploited Madrid’s defensive shortcomings by planting a block and pressurizing them off the ball, Barcelona will probably go down the other route: attacking until they win.

Barça’s attacking highline have often been considered a risk by many at the beginning of the season, but it also happens to be Real’s weakness. With pacey players like Mbappé and Valverde, it’s more than tempting to go for a rapid counter-attack. This may backfire, however, as demonstrated in the Supercup final.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Prediction

  • Prediction: Barcelona to win
  • Odds: 2.16 (22Bet)
  • Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-1 Real Madrid

This is Real’s chance to avoid a trophyless season. However, everything changed after the fiasco against Arsenal, with Carlo Ancelotti reportedly already having lost the trust of his charges. It’s no secret it’s a bad sign ahead of a final, especially against Madrid’s greatest rival.

Flick rested most of his key players against Mallorca, meaning they’re likely to come out energetic for Saturday’s match. Although the injury to Robert Lewandowski may render the task more challenging, Barcelona will probably go home with the trophy.

To add insult to injury, Camavinga’s injury only hampers Real’s chances.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Betting Tip

  • Pick: Lamine Yamal to score
  • Odds: 3.2 (22Bet)

One of Real Madrid’s major issues has been the weaknesses in the full-back position, with no defensively solid left-back capable of stopping Yamal. This may be an issue considering the form of the 17-year-old, who will count on Jules Koundé to support him.

It would be surprising to see Yamal not score, especially considering his advantage in one-on-one situations.
