Barcelona vs Benfica Preview and Team News

Barcelona Team News

Moments before kick-off against Osasuna, LaLiga announced the match would be postponed. First team club doctor Carles Miñarro García passed away shortly before the game, leading Barcelona to request to delay.

While no official date has been set, reports suggest a possible rescheduling for May 19th due to Barcelona’s congested fixture list in the Champions League and Copa del Rey.

Mr Miñarro García had been a doctor at the club for eight years, but this was his first season with the first team. Youth players like Dani Olmo and Gavi were close to Miñarro García, prompting Miguel Olmo to post a tribute on social media.

A minute of silence was observed at the beginning of most LaLiga matches on the following day [Sunday]. Most La Liga clubs wrote a Rest In Peace message on their social media accounts.

Barcelona won the first leg in Lisbon 1-0 against Benfica, dominating the first quarter until defender Pau Cubarsí was sent off for a reckless foul. Hansi Flick reacted with a quick substitution.

Dani Olmo was forced off the pitch, replaced by Ronald Araújo. Barcelona defended resolutely for the rest of the game, with Raphinha netting the only goal early in the second half.

Pau Cubarsí is suspended. Andreas Christensen, Marc Bernal, and Marc-André Ter Stegen remain sidelined through injury.

Barcelona predicted line-up vs Benfica (4-2-3-1): Szczęsny; Balde, Martínez, Araújo, Koundé; Pedri, Casadó; Raphinha, Olmo, Yamal; Lewandowski.

Benfica Team News

Benfica secured a 3-0 victory over CD Nacional, with goals from Zeki Amdouni, Orkun Kökcü, and Vangelis Pavlidis. The team haven’t lost since January, when they lost 3-1 to 6th-placed Casa Pia.

The squad sit second in the Portuguese league with 56 points, trailing Sporting by three. Bruno Lage’s side have won their last five league matches.

In the Champions League, it’s a different story. Benfica had to go through the playoffs to qualify for the Round of 16, where they eliminated Monaco. They edged past Monaco with a 1-0 win away before an eventful 3-3 tie in Lisbon.

Alvaro Carreras is suspended. Alexander Bah, Ángel di Maria, Manu Silva, and Tiago Gouveia are out due to injuries.

Benfica Predicted line-up vs Barcelona (3-4-3): Trubin; Bajrami, Otamendi, Silva; Dahl, Kökcü, Aursnes, Santos; Bruma, Belotti, Amdouni.

Barcelona vs Benfica Prediction

  • Prediction: Barcelona to win
  • Odds: 1.35 (22Bet)
  • Score Prediction: Barcelona 3-0 Benfica

Despite the absence of key defender Pau Cubarsí, Barcelona are expected to win comfortably. Benfica will have to attack but remain without Di María.

The hosts thrive in transitional play due to their superior squad quality. While the death of club doctor García will be traumatic for most players, it could also motivate them to win the match in his honour.

Furthermore, Barcelona can count on Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo to open opposition lines in the final third.

Barcelona vs Benfica Betting Tip

  • Pick: Dani Olmo to score
  • Odds: 2.85 (22Bet)

One of Benfica’s most critical issues will be dealing with the transition threats through Olmo. His positioning between defensive lines makes him challenging to mark without weakening wing coverage. When he’s fit, Olmo helps increase the fluidity and efficiency of Barcelona’s counter-attacks.

Added to that, the guests will be forced to attack, as they’ll enter the game with a 1-0 deficit. This makes it more likely for Olmo to be found in favourable situations.
