AEK Athens begin 2026/27 as champions after winning their 14th Greek title, and the season opens on 22 August.

The summer has already produced two shocks: OFI Crete beat AEK on penalties in the Super Cup, and Olympiacos went out of the Champions League to NEC Nijmegen. Even so, it is Olympiacos, not the champions, who head the 22Bet outright market.

AEK ended a three-year wait, sealing the title on 10 May 2026 with a 2-1 home win over Panathinaikos. Marko Nikolic built it on a 24-match unbeaten run, the longest by any club, but the regular season was tight: three points separated the top three after 26 games.

The 14 clubs play a 26-matchday regular season, then split three ways: a championship play-off for the top four, a Conference League play-off for fifth to eighth, and a relegation play-out for the bottom six. That last group works unlike anything in England or Spain.

The season produced 606 goals in 236 matches, an average of 2.57 per game. Panserraikos lost 10 in a row on the way down. The best crowd was 32,954 for Olympiacos 0-1 Panathinaikos on 8 February, still the fixture that fills Greek grounds.

Iraklis are back for the first time since 2016/17, giving Thessaloniki three clubs alongside PAOK and Aris. Kalamata last appeared in 2000/01.

Manager changes

Two of the big four start under new management. Alessio Lisci replaced Razvan Lucescu at PAOK on 22 June, ending a spell that brought a league title and three cups. The Italian has never worked in Greek football before.

Panathinaikos appointed Jacob Neestrup on a two-year deal in late May, replacing Rafa Benitez. Marko Nikolic stays at AEK, and Jose Luis Mendilibar remains at Olympiacos, so continuity is a real edge for the top two. The same goes for Christos Kontis who remained with OFI Crete.

Two moves shape the title race. AEK sold Orbelin Pineda to Monterrey for 8m euros in July, losing the man who won Player and Goal of the Season. Olympiacos banked 23.3m euros for Konstantinos Tzolakis, the largest fee any Greek club has taken this summer.

African players in the Greece Super League 1 2026/27

Morocco forward Ayoub El Kaabi is the headline name and the reigning Golden Boot winner with 18 goals. At 33, he shows no sign of fading, scoring again for Olympiacos against NEC on 11 August, with a contract to June 2028. Nigeria left-back Bruno Onyemaechi is also at Olympiacos.

Panathinaikos carry the strongest African contingent in Athens. Nigeria striker Cyriel Dessers arrived from Rangers and is joined by Zambia midfielder Kings Kangwa, signed from Hapoel Beer Sheva. Forward Andreas Tetteh was born in Athens to a Ghanaian father but plays for Greece, and made his senior debut in November 2025.

At AEK, Mauritanian winger Aboubakary Koita was Player of the Month for April 2026, while Cameroon centre-back Harold Moukoudi anchored the title-winning defence. Further down, Levadiakos have signed Nigeria winger Moses David Kobnan on loan from Krasnodar.

FIFA has merged the September and October breaks into a single 16-day window running from 21 September to 6 October. Fixtures to circle: the champions host Iraklis on 22 August, the club’s first top-flight game in nine years, and the first Derby of the Eternal Enemies lands on 10 October.

Greece Super League 1 Trophy Race 2026/27: Who Will Win?

The market does not agree with the trophy cabinet: Olympiacos are favourites despite finishing second.

Olympiacos are favourites at 2.50, and the defence is the argument. They conceded 11 goals in 26 regular season games, a rate nobody came close to, and Mendilibar has continuity his rivals lack. The worries are real: Tzolakis has gone to Hull City, and NEC knocked them into the Europa League.

Verdict: The best defence usually wins a 26-game league.

AEK Athens sit at 3.00. Nikolic has Luka Jovic, who scored 17 league goals, plus Hungary striker Barnabas Varga. But Pineda has been sold; they lost the Super Cup to OFI, and a Champions League play-off against Levski Sofia stretches the squad.

Verdict: Fair price, not value. The Pineda hole is bigger than 3.00 implies.

Panathinaikos are 4.50 after the busiest window: Levi Garcia back in Greece on loan with a 12m euro option, Anass Zaroury from Lens, plus Étienne Camara and Kangwa. Neestrup is a smart appointment, but they finished 11 points behind AEK.

Verdict: Avoid at this price - a rebuild rarely wins a title in year one.

PAOK are 6.00 with last season’s best attack, 52 goals, and the most intimidating ground in Toumba. The problem is transition: Lucescu has gone, Lisci is new to Greece, and they lost the Cup final along with the first leg at home to Anderlecht.

Verdict: Interesting for a top-two finish.

Dark horse: OFI Crete have beaten PAOK in the Cup final and AEK in the Super Cup, though 32 points last season says the league itself is beyond them.

Our pick: Olympiacos at 2.50 to win the title. The best defence, a settled manager and rivals in transition is the soundest read of this market. This is editorial opinion rather than a certainty.

Greece Super League 1 Relegation Round 2026/27

This is what separates Greek football from every other European league, and it creates genuine value. After 26 matchdays, the clubs ranked 9th to 14th enter a separate play-out. They play each other twice, 10 more matches, starting with exactly half the points they earned. The bottom two go down.

Halving is not a formality. Last season AEL finished 12th on 23 points, six clear of Asteras Tripolis on 17. Halved, that gap shrank to three, and by the end AEL were relegated while Asteras stayed up. A cushion built over 26 games can vanish in an afternoon of arithmetic.

For 2026/27 the likely candidates are Iraklis and Kalamata, since promoted sides almost always land there in year one, plus Asteras Tripolis, Panetolikos and Kifisia.
