Two key storylines of the EFL Championship 2025/26 Season

1. The Spygate scandal — the play-off expulsion that shocked English football

The drama didn’t stop when the play-offs got underway. Southampton were heavy favourites to gain promotion after finishing fourth and enjoying the longest unbeaten run in the competition (21).

A bombshell was dropped on the English game before the Saints clash with Middlesbrough in the semi-finals, as Southampton admitted to sending a member of their backroom staff to spy on Boro’s training. The EFL responded quickly, expelling the Saints from the playoffs, resulting in Boro being reinstated despite losing in the semi-finals.

However, there wasn’t to be any more drama after the final at Wembley, as Hull City’s promotion was ensured following a 1-0 win. But the punishment for the Saints rolled into the summer, with the club handed a four-point deduction for the start of the 2026/27 season.

2. Coventry's historic title and Leicester's catastrophic fall

The 2025-26 season was all about Frank Lampard’s Coventry City, achieving a first second-tier title since 1996/67, and a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2000/01.

Contrastingly, it was a miserable campaign for two of England’s fallen giants, with Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester City suffering relegation to the third tier. For the Foxes, their relegation was remarkably confirmed ten years to the day since getting their hands on the Premier League title.

With Coventry, Ipswich, and Hull looking ahead to a campaign in the Premier League, they will be replaced by the trio of relegated clubs from 2025/26: West Ham, Wolves, and Burnley.

Opening fixtures to highlight

Relegated Wolves kick off the new Championship season with a home clash against Blackburn on 14th August, while the featured matchup in the opening round sees relegated rivals Burnley and West Ham collide at Turf Moor.

EFL Championship Relegation Battle – Who Goes Down?
