Europa League playoff action resumes on Thursday, as Turkish giants Fenerbahce will be looking to complete the job against Austria Wien. They hold a healthy 2-0 advantage coming into the second leg, and it may be difficult to bet against the Super Lig team.
Europa League Preview
It would seem as though Fenerbahce already has one foot in the Europa League group stages this season, as it will take a herculean effort from Austria Wien to get them back into the tie away from home on Thursday.
The first leg was plain sailing for the Turkish side, as they controlled the possession and looked more than capable of breaking through when they pleased. Their nerves were certainly put at ease after just eight minutes when Joshua King fired home to give them an early lead. Austria Wien were reduced to ten with just minutes remaining at Lucas Galvao was sent off. Fenerbahce made the man advantage could just six minutes later, as Serdar Dursun scored the second goal in the 90th minute.
The second goal is ultimately the decisive one, as Wien will need to start extremely strong in the second leg and find an early goal from somewhere. However, the chances of that happening look incredibly slim, as they mustered just two shots on target in the first leg last week.
Fenerbahce looked strong on their return to domestic action on Monday, as they eased to a 4-2 home win against Adana Demirspor, with Enner Valencia scoring twice. Meanwhile, Austria Wien also warmed up for the return leg with a victory, as they came back from 1-0 down to beat Wolfsberg 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. However, they will need to be stronger in defence in this second leg.
Fenerbahce vs Austria Wien Head to Head
This will be only the second time that Fenerbahce and Austria Wien have clashed in European competition. The first meeting took place last week, with the Turkish side running out comfortable 2-0 winners.
Fenerbahce vs Austria Wien Prediction
Based on the showing that we saw last week, it would appear incredibly unlikely that Austria Wien will get back into this tie. Their best chance is starting quickly and finding the net within the first 15 minutes, but even then, it looks hard to not see Fenerbahce scoring at least once. We could see the Turkish side winning the second leg with both teams finding the target.
