The host nation of the African Nations Championship will face a huge challenge in the quarterfinals of the competition this year, as they come up against Group B winners, DR Congo.
African Nations Championship Preview
Cameroon would have been considered one of the favourites to win the African Nations Championship this year, as they had the added advantage of playing the competition in their home country. However, they will come into this huge quarterfinal without a win in their last two fixtures. They managed to survive a scare on the final day to seal the second spot in Group A, as they finished just a point clear of Burkina Faso. They drew 0-0 with that nation on the final matchday, which was somewhat fortunate given that the most chances in that fixture fell to Burkina Faso. Cameroon’s only win in the African Nations Championship so far this year came on the opening matchday against Zimbabwe, as they managed to secure a 1-0 win. Salomon Charles Banga scored 20 minutes from the end of that game to get the win.
DR Congo will be hiding high coming into this game, as they topped Group B. They won two of the three games that they played during that phase of the competition, as they beat Congo and Niger. The latter of those wins was a 2-1 success, with Amede Masasi scoring in the 91st minute to give them all three points. Kadima Kabangu also scored for DR Congo in that victory. Their only other game in the group stage came against Libya, as the two nations played out a 1-1 draw. Late goals has become a trend for DR Congo throughout the competition to this point, as they scored their equalising goal in that contest in the 94th minute through Masasi.
DR Congo vs Cameroon Head To Head
These two sides have played each other in the African Nations Championship on three occasions since 2013. DR Congo beat Cameroon in the group stages of the 2013 competition, before being beaten on penalties in the later match between the sides. The most recent meeting came in a friendly, with Cameroon winning 2-0.
DR Congo vs Cameroon Prediction
Cameroon hold the advantage in the head to head record, but there is a feeling that DR Congo are the better side in this year’s competition. They should get the win to progress through to the semi-finals.
