Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Preview

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham’s campaign has been a rollercoaster, marked by inconsistency and fluctuating form. They currently sit 10th in the league with 20 points after 14 matches. Three points separate them from the top six, but they’re already 15 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

In the last six matches, Ange Postecoglou only won one game against Manchester City (0-4). However, they lost to Ipswich (2-0) and Bournemouth (1-0). Tottenham were also held back by Fulham in a frustrating 1-1 stalemate.

Tottenham’s Europa League campaign started promisingly with wins against Qarabag (3-0) and Ferencváros (2-1). Their most recent success in the competition was a 1-0 win against AZ Alkmaar, but subsequent games have exposed their vulnerabilities. A 3-2 loss to Galatasaray in Turkey and a 2-2 draw with AS Roma have dented their European ambitions.

Chelsea

Chelsea have emerged as surprise title challengers, currently second in the Premier League after 14 matches.

Many discredited newly-appointed Enzo Maresca for playing with two different squads, but his approach has worked out so far. Only two teams have defeated the Blues in the Premier League this season: Manchester City (0-2) and Liverpool (2-1).

While Chelsea’s defence is solid with 15 goals conceded in 14 matches, there is room for improvement in high-pressure games. Chelsea won against Southampton on Wednesday (1-5), just after winning against Emery’s Aston Villa (3-0).

Chelsea have also been successful in the Conference League, as they started their campaign with a 4-2 victory over Gent. Their European journey continued with a 1-4 win against Panathinaikos, followed by a 8-0 victory against FC Noah. In their last Conference League game, Chelsea defeated Heidenheim (0-2). This perfect winning streak has put the Blues at the top of the UECL table.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Player Focus

Tottenham have struggled with injuries, especially those of key players like Romero and Van de Ven. However, one of their standout players of the season is fit – James Maddison.

Maddison has consistently been Tottenham’s best midfielder when they needed him the most. He’s created the chances for the front three while also improving his defensive work. Five goals and three assists are remarkable stats considering he’s a midfielder and that the team hasn’t been consistent.

On the other side, the obvious choice for Chelsea is Moisés Caicedo. While he’s always been a great prospect, Caicedo has improved under Enzo Maresca. He’s become omnipresent, involved in all phases of plays. He rarely gets his flowers, but his commitment is second to none. His high technical levels allow him to combine well under pressure.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Analysis

Tottenham’s inconsistency makes it hard to predict which version of the team will show up on Sunday. They’ve demonstrated to the world that they can beat elite teams—they defeated Manchester City twice. However, they also lost to Crystal Palace and Ipswich.

Without Van de Ven and Romero, it’s difficult to imagine that Tottenham won’t struggle on the defensive end, which will be an issue when facing Chelsea’s forward line of Cole Palmer, Caicedo and Jackson.

At the same time, Chelsea won’t be the absolute favorite either. They have performed well against top clubs (1-1 vs Arsenal and Manchester United), but lack the cutting edge to defeat teams like Manchester City and Liverpool. However, it’s likely that Caicedo will play a major role in the center, especially when counter-attacking.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Prediction

  • Football pick: Chelsea to win
  • Odds: 2.104 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea

Tottenham’s inconsistency makes them a difficult team to predict, but without two of their most important defenders, this match is likely to tilt to Chelsea’s favour. The Blues have scored more than 30 goals, which averages two goals per game.

At the same time, they have dominated this London derby in recent years, which is another reason why I’m inclined to believe they will come out victorious. However, with the home advantage and an in-form James Maddison, Tottenham won’t go down without a fight.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Betting Tip

  • Football Pick: Both teams to score
  • Odds: 1.32 (22Bet)

Eight points separate the two teams, but they have similar records. Both teams conceded 15 goals, while Tottenham scored 28 and Chelsea scored three more. Given the attacking quality on both sides, this match promises goals.

With the likes of Heung-min Son and James Maddison on one side, and Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke on the other, there are plenty of reasons to believe both teams will score.
