Second round action in the DFB Pokal takes centre stage in Germany this midweek. Stuttgart will be looking to continue their strong start to the domestic season when they welcome Union Berlin to MHPArena. But, which side will progress through to the third round?
DFB Pokal Preview
It has been a strong start to the new domestic season for Stuttgart, as they have continued to progress in the German top-flight following their promotion back to the top flight in 2019-20. They have certainly improved this term following their 16th place finish in the league last term, but their attention will switch to the DFB Pokal this week.
Stuttgart enjoyed a solid run in the competition last term, as they reached the final four for the first time since 2013. The German giants got their domestic cup campaign off to an excellent start at the beginning of the season, as they cruised through to the second round after landing a strong 4-0 win on the road against Balingen. Enzo Millot opened the scoring in that victory, before further efforts were added by Silas, Serhou Guirassy, and Wataru Endo.
It has been a strange start to the new season for Union Berlin, as they are battling at the wrong end of the standings following an excellent campaign last term. Their recent 2-0 away defeat against Werder Bremen saw them drop to 15th in the Bundesliga standings.
They have been regular players in the latter stages of the DFB Pokal in recent seasons, as they have reached the quarterfinals in three of the previous four seasons. In the opening round of the competition, they cruised to a 4-0 away win against Astoria Walldorf. Robin Knoche, Diogo Leite, and Janik Haberer all found the net in that win.
Stuttgart vs Union Berlin Head to Head
Union Berlin have suffered just a single defeat from their last nine matches against Stuttgart across all competitions. However, that defeat was suffered earlier this month, as they were thumped 3-0 in the German capital by Stuttgart on October 21.
Stuttgart vs Union Berlin Prediction
Union will need to respond following a slow start to the season this week, and a case could be made for the visitors that this is a good opportunity to get back on track. Therefore, we will be taking a chance on Union finally getting back in the win column on Tuesday.
