Southampton vs Swansea Preview

Southampton

Ivan Jurić will use this weekend’s FA Cup showdown against Swansea as an opportunity to get to know his fringe players better. It’s been a forgettable start to the season for Southampton, and they’re on course to finish the campaign with the lowest points tally in Premier League history.

Adam Lallana and Adam Armstrong appear fit enough to start this Sunday after coming off the bench last weekend in a 5-0 home loss against Brentford. Both players will be tasked with improving Southampton’s fortunes in front of goal, as the Saints have scored just ten goals from an open play xG of 18.25.

Defensively, Southampton have been poor throughout the campaign. They’ve allowed 31 goals from a lofty xGA of 41.11. They should, however, have things their own way against Championship opposition this weekend, as Swansea aren’t playing at Premier League level.

Swansea

Luke Williams will be hoping that his side can give a good account of themselves this weekend after enduring mixed fortunes in the Championship so far this term. Swansea saved a point against West Brom in their latest outing, which was a satisfactory return to form after a 4-0 beating at the hands of Portsmouth.

The Swans have no injury concerns, and they’ll adopt a 4-2-3-1 formation, which is tailor-made for hitting teams on the counter-attack. Ronald Martins could be a player worth keeping tabs on, as the Brazilian has registered seven goal involvements in 26 encounters this season.

The squad have averaged 9.35 shots per match in the second tier this term, and they have accumulated an xG of 1.28, scoring a total of 30 goals. However, Swansea have only kept clean sheets in 8% of their games on the road.

Southampton vs Swansea Prediction

  • Pick: Southampton to win
  • Odds: 1.78 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Southampton 2-1 Swansea

Southampton will use this weekend’s showdown as an opportunity to build confidence ahead of their trip to Old Trafford next week.

Swansea concede far too many chances in their final third, and it’s unlikely they’ll get away with surrendering as many against the Premier League rival on Sunday.

The trends side with the win for the hosts, as Southampton have won each of their last five against Williams’ men. They include a 5-0 victory in the previous meeting between the sides at St. Mary’s in December 2023.

Southampton vs Swansea Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Both Teams to Score
  • Odds: 1.70 (22Bet)

Despite coming up against Championship opposition, it remains hard to see the hosts keeping a rare clean sheet. The guests have scored in seven of their last eight matches, and Ivan Juric’s squad have conceded an xGA of over 40 in the Premier League from open play this term. Both teams to score appears to be a solid Southampton vs Swansea prediction.

Meanwhile, Adam Armstrong could be a good scoring angle. The forward has only seen the net twice in 17 in the Premier League this season, but he was at his level in the Championship last term when scoring 24 in 49.
