Rangers qualified thanks to a first-leg victory over Turkish side Fenerbahce (1-3) in Istanbul. However, they came close to elimination in the second leg, with the opponents winning 2-0 to force penalties. The Scottish camp won the penalty shootout 3-2 to progress to the next round.

They reached the next round despite a 2-1 first-leg defeat to Roma, winning 3-1 at San Mamés in the return leg. The match was heavily influenced by Hummels’ red card in the 12th minute for a harsh foul. Nico Williams scored a brace, while left-back Yuri Berchiche also found the net. The latter is regularly praised for his consistency, having featured in almost every event this season.
