Manchester United vs Chelsea Preview

Manchester United

INEOS took the world by surprise by firing Erik Ten Hag this week. Although the team has failed to progress in the past two years, the timing has left many puzzled. While Ten Hag’s departure was anticipated, many question why the decision wasn’t made before the start of the season.

Rubén Amorim has been confirmed as Ten Hag’s successor, he will start on November 11 at Old Trafford.

In the meantime, Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in charge as interim manager. The Dutchman returned to the club this summer as an assistant and admitted that “this is a short job,” aware he won’t hold the reins for long.

Manchester United fans are justifiably frustrated with the club’s management. West Ham defeated Manchester United (2-1), and the Red Devils were helpless against Tottenham (3-0).

Their European campaign has been equally disappointing, as they were also unable to defeat Turkish side Fenerbahce (1-1), after failing to beat Dutch club Twente (1-1).

Manchester United is currently 14th in the Premier League, with only eleven points after nine games, four of which were defeats. They have a negative goal difference (-3), and only won three games this season. Tyrrell Malacia and Daniel Gore won’t be available due to injury.

Team WeaknessesLack of defending in the midfield, pressing easy to bypass, lack of sustained pressure.
Key injuries and suspensions.Tyrrell Malacia, Daniel Gore

Chelsea

Despite the chaos amidst an excess of signings, Enzo Maresca has found a balance within Chelsea’s ranks. He mostly uses only half of his available squad, as he quickly understood this would serve the team’s interests.

Chelsea is fifth in the Premier League, with 17 points, only one point below Arsenal and Aston Villa. This position marks major progress compared to last season, when the team finished mid-table. Although this is Maresca’s first job at this level, he appears to be settling in well.

However, the team was knocked out of the EFL Cup after a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle, marked by Axel Disasi’s own goal. Alexander Isak had scored the opener three minutes earlier, and Chelsea never found the means to pass through Newcastle’s wall.

João Félix carried the ball through transitions but was unable to be creative enough in the final third to score. Chelsea struggled to keep Sandro Tonali’s influence at bay, often forcing the Blues to defend instead of counter-attacking. The team largely dominated in possession (65%), but much of their play stalled in midfield.

Recent FormDLWWL
Key Player to WatchMykhaylo Mudryk
Team StrengthsXI full of individual quality, clarity in transitions.
Team WeaknessesLack of balance between profiles, many unhappy players due to lack of involvement, weak defence.
Key injuries and suspensions.None.

Manchester United vs Chelsea Head-to-Head Statistics

Manchester United vs Chelsea is one of the most popular encounters of the Premier League. The two teams have faced each other 177 games times. United won most matches (69), while Chelsea won 51. Another 57 matches ended in a draw.

Chelsea won the most recent encounter in April, a 4-3 thriller at Stamford Bridge. Connor Gallagher opened the score for the hosts, after which Cole Palmer doubled the score. United replied with three goals, one scored by Bruno Fernandes, and the two others by Alejandro Garnacho.

When everything seemed to indicate a victory for Manchester, Cole Palmer completed his hat-trick to make it 4-3.

Manchester United last won in December 2023 (2-1), when Scott McTominay scored a brace while Palmer scored Chelsea’s consolation goal.

Manchester United vs Chelsea Player Focus

Coming up with one player is a difficult task, as both clubs are known for recklessly spending ridiculous amounts every transfer window.

However, for Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes is worth mentioning. He’s the team’s most reliable player, as Alejandro Garnacho still struggles to play consistently at a high level. Known for his ability to exploit spaces in Zone 14 – the area just outside the opponent’s penalty box – Fernandes poses a continuous threat.

On Chelsea’s side, the choice is even more difficult. However, Mykhaylo Mudryk is my option, considering he has improved the most since Maresca’s appointment. Mudryk previously headed for the ball without any consideration for his teammates, often losing possession, which in turn, led to counter-attacks.

Sińce Maresca’s arrival, fans have seen a more thoughtful Mudryk, which says a lot about Maresca’s individual coaching methods.

Manchester United vs Chelsea Analysis

This match may not produce a 4-3 thriller like the last encounter, but goals are certainly expected.

However, it’s difficult to predict what Manchester United will look like under van Nistelrooy, as it will be his Premier League debut as United’s gaffer. The team was set up for failure under Erik ten Hag, which means the bar for success is arguably lower than ever.

On the other hand, Chelsea will rely on Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez to spark quick transitions. However, João Félix’s lack of progress has been an issue at Stamford Bridge, as his lack of impact in the final third has become a big issue for the Blues.

Manchester United vs Chelsea Prediction

  • Football pick: Manchester United to win
  • Odds: 2.46 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Manchester United 0-2 Chelsea

Changing coaches in the middle of the season rarely provides a quick fix, as managers need time to reshape their teams.

In this case, United’s players will be managed by Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined the team as assistant coach this summer. Though interim appointments often bring minimal impact, this year alone will see United working with at least four different managers.

I expect United’s instability to give Chelsea a major advantage despite the match taking place at the legendary Old Trafford. Mudryk has finally been in form, and Chelsea hasn’t been this functional in years.

Manchester United vs Chelsea Betting Tip

  • Football Pick: Mudryk to score
  • Odds: 4.5 (22Bet)

Mudryk’s scoring history is far from the best, but he could impress against Manchester United at Old Trafford this weekend.

For a dribbler like Mudryk, playing against a United defence that has conceded 17 goals in their last 11 matches means that he will likely find plenty of chances. Therefore, our free football prediction suggests that Mudryk to score is a bet worth considering.
