Leicester City vs Manchester United Preview and Team News

Leicester City News

Leicester are 19th in the Premier League, in danger of relegation, and six points behind 17th-placed Wolverhampton. Ruud van Nistelrooy’s men fell to Chelsea in a 1-0 defeat, despite showing positive signs as the Dutchman switched to a five-man defence.

Although the squad improved defensively, Jamie Vardy only recorded four touches in the penalty box, a telling statistic about their offensive struggles. This is an issue he pointed out after the game to BBC Radio: “Leicester did a lot of things right, but where are the goals coming from”?

Until this match, van Nistelrooy unsuccessfully deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation. The team struggled to impress on both ends despite not playing terribly. The five-man backline was presumably an effort to counter Chelsea’s offence, but it’s unlikely to be repeated given the offensive shortcomings of the setup.

Leicester’s last win was a 2-1 victory against Tottenham in late January. Since then, they’ve lost five Premier League events.

Harry Souttar, Abdul Fatawu, and Odsonne Édouard remain sidelined due to injuries.

Leicester City predicted line-up vs Manchester United (3-4-2-1): Hermansen; Thomas, Coady, Faes; Kristiansen, Soumaré, Ndidi, Justin; El Khannouss, Daka; Vardy.

Key Player to WatchJamie Vardy
Team StrengthsStrong defence, variety in profiles
Team WeaknessesSwitch of coaches, uncertainty in project, inexperienced manager, lack of quality up front
Key injuries and suspensions.Harry Souttar, Abdul Fatawu, and Odsonne Édouard

Manchester United Team News

Manchester United qualified for the Europa League quarter finals after eliminating Real Sociedad and will face Olympique Lyon in April. They drew at San Sebastián (1-1) in the first leg, but defeated the Basque at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick (with two goals coming from the penalty spot). Diogo Dalot scored a goal in extra time. The match was pretty even until Real’s right-back Jon Aramburri was sent off in the second half.

The Europa League is the only chance at silverware for Rúben Amorim this season. His team will qualify for the CL should they win the competition.

According to Fichajes, Barcelona have rejected United’s bid for Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong. They want to keep him, and the midfielder wants to stay.

Manchester unveiled a prototype of what the new stadium would look like, while Sir Jim Ratcliffe claimed it would become “the world’s greatest stadium”. However, fan clubs were not in awe with the news. The 1958 fan group say it’s a “soulless corporate structure, more akin to a modern entertainment venue than a football cathedral”.

Patrick Dorgu is suspended. Bayındır, Diallo, Maguire, Evans, Mainoo, Yoro, Martinez, Shaw, Mount, and Heaton are out with injuries.

Manchester United predicted line-up vs Leicester City (3-4-2-1): Onana; Heaven, Lindelöf, De Ligt; Dalot, Casemiro, Fernandes, Mazraoui; Eriksen, Garnacho; Zirkzee.

Key Player to WatchBruno Fernandes
Team StrengthsSuperior individual offensive quality, squad depth, quality wing-backs
Team WeaknessesLack of pressing, lack of midfield stability and dominance, weak mechanisms against low-block defences, poor squad building
Key injuries and suspensions.Altay Bayındır, Amad Diallo, Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, Kobbie Mainoo, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, and Tom Heaton. Patrick Dorgu is suspended.

Leicester City vs Manchester United Head-to-Head Statistics

These teams have faced each other in 23 fixtures, 14 of which ended in a Manchester United victory. Leicester City came out victorious four times and drew on five occasions.

The visitors won the previous clash, a 2-1 win in the FA Cup in February thanks to goals from Zirkzee and Maguire, after being 1-0 down by half-time.

The hosts’ last victory agains Manchester was in 2021. They won 4-2 thanks to goals from Tielemans, Söyüncü, Vardy and Daka. United were passive throughout the match, recording half of Leicester xG, under the reign of Ole Solskjaer, who was fired a month later by the club.

All five previous encounters ended in a Manchester United victory.

Leicester City vs Manchester United Player Focus

Leicester City continue to rely on the Ndidi-Daka-Vardy spine, which makes Vardy our pick. Despite his age, he remains the club’s top scorer with seven goals.

Although it may seem a low figure for a lone striker, it should be remembered that he rarely gets service in the box. If there’s anyone Manchester should be looking at, it’s Vardy.

On United’s side, Bruno Fernandes remains the primary playmaker of the team. He scored a hat-trick against Real Sociedad last Thursday, and continued to be the main source of chance creation of the squad. With Zirkzee improving as of late, Fernandes’ technical accuracy could be key to unlocking Leicester City’s low block.

Leicester City vs Manchester United Analysis

Leicester switched to a five-man defence against Chelsea, in the hope of countering their offensive threat. Although it ended in a 0-1 defeat, they’re likely to try a similar approach against their guests.

Manchester often struggle against low blocks, which require creativity and tactical precision to be unlocked. Leicester’s coach and United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy know it better than anyone. However, the individual quality should favour the visitors’ approach.

Leicester City vs Manchester United Prediction

  • Prediction: Manchester United to win
  • Odds: 1.82 (22Bet)
  • Score Prediction: Leicester City 0-1 Manchester United

Despite the home advantage, a victory is unlikely for the hosts. With Vardy receiving little service, there’s nobody left to assist him in the penalty box. Van Nistelrooy must either sacrifice offensively or defensively, a gamble where both end in Leicester’s defeat.

Manchester have not been beaten by the home club in four years, and their individual quality should save them no matter what low block Leicester try to build. United are 14th and need this victory to avoid any relegation scares.

Leicester City vs Manchester United Betting Tip

  • Pick: Joshua Zirkzee to score
  • Odds: 2.75 (22Bet)

Although Bruno Fernandes would be the obvious choice, Zirkzee was excellent against Real Sociedad and has been improving in recent weeks.

Initially criticized, he’s demonstrated the mental resilience needed to succeed at the club. With the through balls of Fernandes, Zirkzee is likely to have enough service in the penalty box to score for Manchester United.
