Getafe vs Barcelona Preview

Getafe

While Getafe ended 2024 with two defeats, 2025 couldn’t have started better for them. The team won away against Las Palmas (2-1) with goals from Borja Mayoral and Coba da Costa in the last twenty minutes. This marked the team’s first on-the-road victory of the 24/25 season La Liga season.

They also progressed to the next stage in the Copa del Rey, eliminating Granada (0-1) and Pontevedra (0-1). The match against the latter exemplified the ‘ideal’ Getafe performance, with Álvaro Rodriguez scoring in the second minute.

José Bordalas installed his deep block, and his men gave possession to fourth-division Pontevedra. This left them playing with ten men against eleven for the remaining forty-five minutes. Getafe became more defensive, managing only 17% possession. The team is known for resisting with an iron mentality in such situations.

Bordalas’ squad currently rank 15th in La Liga, collecting 19 points in 19 matches. They are one of the league’s worst attacking teams, scoring only 13 goals (only 19th-placed Real Valladolid scored 13, too).

Barcelona

After two difficult months in November and December, Hansi Flick couldn’t have asked for a better start to the year. Barcelona won their first title after eliminating Athletic Club (2-0). They also defeated arch-rival Real Madrid (5-2) despite being down to 10 with over half an hour left.

Flick’s men conceded in the fifth minute in a counter-attack but were all over an unprepared Real Madrid as they used their Gegenpressing to their advantage. Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Alejandro Balde all found the net.

Barcelona remained competitive despite being reduced to 10 men with over half an hour remaining. They were more defensive but still got a couple of chances when counter-attacking. Although the Supercopa is often downplayed as a minor trophy, there will never be an insignificant Clásico.

Three days later, Flick’s machine returned to Spain to face Real Betis in the RO16 of the Copa del Rey. The head coach took the visitors by surprise as he left Lewandowski on the bench, instead opting to use Dani Olmo as a false nine.

With Gavi returning to the XI and finding himself on the scoresheet, it reminded most fans of Spain’s highly technical, strikerless 2012 team. As this seemed to work, fans began to wonder if this could be a viable alternative when Lewandowski underperforms.

On the other hand, Barcelona are third in La Liga after losing their last two matches of 2024, leaving them six points behind Atlético de Madrid.

Getafe vs Barcelona Head-to-Head Statistics

The two teams have faced each other 29 times, with 21 matches ending in Barcelona’s favour. Getafe won 2 clashes with 6 draws. Their last encounter resulted in a 1-0 victory for Barça in late September. After struggling to progress against Getafe’s low block, Robert Lewandowski’s strike in the 19th minute allowed his team to take the three points.

Los Azulones only won twice in their history against Barcelona, with the last win back in 2020, half a year after the outbreak of COVID-19. Jaime Mata converted the penalty in the 56th minute, which remained the only goal of the encounter.

Getafe vs Barcelona Player Focus

Lamine Yamal will undoubtedly be the most critical player in this encounter. At the end of last year, the 17-year-old declared that he wanted to improve his goal-scoring skills in the hope of winning more titles. In his previous three matches, he scored three goals.

He seems calmer, increasingly scoring softer goals which don’t hold much power but managed to fool the goalkeepers. His net against Real Madrid caused many fans to compare it to Lionel Messi’s excellence.

Another player, whose importance can’t be overstated, has reappeared for Barcelona. Gavi returned after a year-long injury and was key in their last two victories. Against Getafe, known for their aggressive approach, his defensive shift will be key to keeping his squad’s defence afloat.

Pau Cubarsí, who behaves like a playmaker in the defence, can also be mentioned. He often launched his players in inside channels, which led to Barcelona breaking through the centre. It’s in Getafe’s best interest to stop this youngster from doing so.

For the hosts, Borja Mayoral is expected to lead the legion up front. His physical dominance is key, especially when paired with Cubarsí, who may find it difficult to match him in the air. However, the return of Ronald Araújo would make this more difficult. Mayoral’s greatest chance is to escape in counters when Barcelona’s defence is open.

Getafe vs Barcelona Analysis

This pairing opposes the ideal opponents. Their philosophies couldn’t differ more. Barcelona is always looking to open up play, while Getafe prefer to close all channels down in a low block.

Barça are often weak on the counter as they tend to overstretch on the offence. Los Azulones repeatedly demonstrated they could hold a lead for ninety minutes, even if it meant not touching the ball for dozens of minutes. They are more than happy to play for survival.

After the 5-1 win against Real Betis, the most crucial question is whether Dani Olmo will play as a false nine again or if Lewandowski will reclaim his spot. The Polak often slows play down, but his physical dominance may be more useful against a low block.

Getafe vs Barcelona Prediction

  • Football pick: Barcelona to win
  • Odds: 1.51 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Getafe 0-1 Barcelona

Clashes between Barcelona and Getafe are often intense, as head coach Bordalas frequently gets accused of teaching anti-football to his players. His players often get sent off with violent conduct, as happened against Pontevedra. However, his low block often poses a problem to opponents who get frustrated by this style of football.

Hansi Flick’s men often struggle against low blocks because they’re well-equipped against his gegenpressing, which can leave the team open on the counter. With Mayoral in form, any mistake could become a headache against Barcelona, similar to the match against Leganés.

Getafe vs Barcelona Betting Tip

  • Football Pick: More than 28.5 fouls
  • Odds: 2.2 (22Bet)

Getafe are known for playing so-called anti-football, and their players are often sent off or collect yellow cards. Additionally, they’re frequently accused of slowing down time by fouling their opponents. Against one of the best teams in the league, we anticipate a tense match.
