England vs Switzerland Team Overview

England

Gareth Southgate’s stay as England manager was minutes away from coming to an early end last Sunday, before Jude Bellingham salvaged the blushes of a nation to force extra time against Slovakia

Harry Kane eventually netted the winner, but the success in 120 minutes did little to ease the pressure on Southgate and this floundering England side.

The Three Lions have looked void of ideas throughout the tournament in the final third, despite boasting a wealth of attacking options. Not only that, but England looked leggy and fatigued throughout their grueling showdown with Slovakia last Sunday.

Changes will need to be made by Southgate this weekend if England are going to keep their hopes of a first major success since 1966 alive.

Recent Form (all competitions, most recent first)W (AET) – D-D-W-L
Key Players to WatchJude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Kobe Mainoo
Team StrengthsWinning games when not at their best. Attacking quality remains, but form remains a question.
Team WeaknessesForm of attacking players. Defence looks vulnerable under pressure.

Switzerland

Switzerland will be the next nation to try and knock out the Three Lions, and a victory on Saturday could also see them achieve their best ever showing at a EUROs. The Swiss were typically consistent in the group stage, eventually settling for second after a win over Hungary and draws against Germany and Scotland

Murat Yakin’s side have been capable of big upsets throughout their history, with further evidence of that shown in the previous round.

The Swiss were everything that England haven’t been in that round of 16 win over Italy, as they were expansive in the final third of the field, and created chances at ease against a usually reliable Italian backline.

The manner of their victory could be hard to overlook when making an England vs Switzerland prediction, but it is also worth noting just how poor Italy was, as they managed just a single shot on target in 90 minutes.

Recent Form (all competitions, most recent first)W-D-D-W-D
Key Players to WatchManuel Akanji, Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka
Team StrengthsReliable across the field, with excellent ball-playing defenders.

England vs Switzerland Player Focus

Jude Bellingham was the man for the big moment in England’s late turnaround against Slovakia in the previous round, highlighting once again that Southgate was right to start the tournament with the Real Madrid man in the number ten position.

There could be more space for the former Birmingham star to operate in on Saturday should Phil Foden drop to the bench, meaning that he will likely have a more free role to get involved in the build-up. His record already in this tournament speaks for itself after netting twice in four matches.

Granit Xhaka’s career looked to be going backwards after a stale stay at Arsenal, but he has been one of the standout midfielders in Europe for Bayer Leverkusen this term. His form has continued throughout the EUROs, taking the ball under pressure and getting the Swiss up the field.

His passing ability will be something that England will need to be aware of on Saturday, as if he is given time, the Three Lions defence could quickly come under pressure.

England vs Switzerland Tactical Analysis

Southgate’s approach to this match will be fascinating, as the four previous games in the tournament show that his ideal team selection isn’t working. The midfield battle will be crucial on Saturday, with the Swiss boasting power in that area of the field. Therefore, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Kobbie Mainoo and Jude Bellingham operate in a three-man midfield alongside Declan Rice

Kieran Trippier’s performances also means that a new left-back could be deployed on Saturday, with Foden also likely to drop out of the side in order to give Cole Palmer a chance.

The midfield battle will determine the side that wins this tie, but if England are to dominate possession, then they will need to be more progressive in the final third with their final passes to cause this well-structured Swiss defence issues.

England vs Switzerland Prediction

  • Football pick: England & BTTS
  • Odds: 5.5 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: England 3-1 Switzerland

This weekend could be the time when the shackles finally come off for England. Foden’s likely exclusion means Bellingham will have extra space to work in, with Palmer and Bukayo Saka likely to be asked to stay wide to offer balance to the team.

However, we could still see the Swiss causing issues for England, especially considering another unrecognised left-back will be playing, and Marc Guehi will be suspended.

England vs Switzerland Betting Tip

  • Football Pick: Declan Rice To Score
  • Odds: 15 (22Bet)

Including Mainoo on the England side allows Declan Rice to roam forward more freely, something that many believe will benefit the team in the long term. Rice was close to scoring in the match against Slovakia, but his effort rebounded off the post before Kane put the ball over the net.

His long-range shooting could be a factor on Saturday, and the Arsenal man could be an interesting betting angle to find the net.
