Colombia
Colombia looked set for a great World Cup Qualifiers campaign in the first two rounds, having drawn against Peru (1-1). The second game surprised the world as Colombia defeated Argentina (2-1). This marked the Albiceleste’s first defeat in 2024, having gone almost 365 days without a defeat.
Colombia suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Bolivia, with the high-altitude conditions in La Paz playing a significant role.

Nonetheless, Héctor Cuéllar was sent off in the 20th minute, which should have given Colombia enough to work with to come back home with three points. It didn’t stop Miguel Terceros from scoring the only goal of the match in the 58th minute.
Despite the setback, Colombia remains second with 16 points, only outclassed by Argentina (19 pts). Fortunately for Colombia, Uruguay also lost their match against Peru (0-1).
Jhon Durán will be available against Chile after missing the match against Bolivia due to suspension. Colombia can also count on the home advantage, where the team tends to perform better.
Chile
When I wrote the last preview of Chile, the team wasn’t the last one yet, as Peru was. This changed this weekend with Chile’s defeat against Brazil, while Peru won against Uruguay (2-1). The updated table shows Chile one point behind Peru (6 pts).
The defeat against Brazil marked the Chileans’ 17th defeat in 20 matches. Chile seemed on course for victory after Vargas’ early goal, but Brazil’s last-minute strike secured the win.

Chile’s last victory came a year ago against a struggling Peru. Despite Colombia’s defeat against Bolivia, an upset against Colombia is unlikely.
Chile partially revamped its squad against Brazil, and it’s likely that a similar team to the XI that played against Brazil would be fielded. Right-back Felipe Loyola provided the decisive pass for Vargas’ goal: it’s likely fans will see him again on Tuesday night.
However, Alexis Sánchez will be a visible absence during that night, while the defence will have to do without Matias Catalán. Vicente Pizarro will also be absent due to a broken jaw, and no return date has been announced yet.
Colombia vs Chile Prediction
- Prediction: Colombia to win
- Odds: 1.43 (22Bet)
- Score Prediction: Colombia 3-0 Chile
Colombia is expected to win the match by all means. It can’t afford to lose more points to ensure qualification. Chile’s attack has struggled in the absence of Alexis Sanchez, leaving the team without inspiration. The attack has looked dull without him, which will allow Colombia to dominate the match.

Colombia’s consistent goal-scoring compensates for some defensive vulnerabilities, including having to rely on the injury-prone Yerry Mina. If there is a match that would allow Colombia to experiment with newcomers, this would be the game. The return of Jhon Durán would allow the Aston Villa striker to cement his role in the team.
Colombia vs Chile Betting Tip
- Pick: Jhon Duran to score
- Odds: 3 (22Bet)
Jhon Durán’s evolution with Aston Villa under Unai Emery has attracted the eyes of all European scouts. He is dynamic, pacey, and incredibly smart as a forward. It’s no surprise that he is rapidly climbing through Colombia’s ranks.
Chile’s defence is being revamped and, therefore, lacks stability. Durán will be able to count on home support in Barranquilla, where Colombia remains a strong fortress.

Furthermore, it should be mentioned that Chile finds it challenging to keep a clean sheet across all competitions, making it the perfect target for Jhon Durán.
He is expected to show similar performances to those the people have seen with Aston Villa, which can be a challenge for South Americans who are used to European pitches. However, this shouldn’t stop him from scoring against Chile, the weakest team of the tournament.
