Chelsea vs Southampton Preview and Team News
Chelsea Team News
Chelsea, who have quietly seen their Premier League season go downhill, will hope for a resurrection of sorts when they host stragglers Southampton midweek.
They were promised so much by the arrival of manager Enzo Maresca and are now ranked in the sixth spot of the table. They’re finding it challenging to play against teams that are more dominant on the ball.

Cole Palmer, their best player by far, is ranked 3rd in big chances created in the competition (18), and he’ll have to be on top of his game in this match. However, we can expect him to be marked heavily by the Southampton defenders. The visitors’ Kyle Walker-Peters is doing a good job in the wingback’s position.
Palmer will, therefore, have to either drop deep inside his half or float to the wings to find space.
Maresca’s injury concerns include Benoit Badiashile, David Fofana, Nicholas Jackson, Noni Madueke, Romeo Lavia, Wesley Fofana, and Marc Guiu.
Chelsea predicted lineup vs Southampton (4-2-3-1): Jorgensen; James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Fernandez, Caicedo; Palmer, Neto, Sancho; Nkunku.
Southampton Team News
Southampton have not been the best team in the Premier League this season. In fact, they’re ranked last in the table and are slated to get relegated by the end of this campaign.
This will come as a big blow to the guests as they qualified for the Premier League after a painstaking season in the 2023-24 Championship. Against Chelsea, they’ll have to be more assertive with their zonal marking, as the hosts’ attackers have the tendency to drift into wide areas and find areas to exploit.

Southampton usually like to play in a three-man central defence, which will help them against the Blues. They’ll also want to keep possession of the ball more often, as was seen in their encounter against Ipswich Town three games ago. They won 2-1.
Amongst the players who are questionable due to injury are Adam Lallana, Flynn Downes, Jack Stephens, and Ryan Fraser. Ross Stewart and Taylor Harwood-Bellis are expected to return in late February and mid-March.
Southampton predicted lineup vs Chelsea (3-4-1-2): Ramsdale; Bednarek, Wood, Bree; Wellington, Aribo, Smallbone, Walker-Peters; Fernandes; Onuachu, Sulemana.
Bet hereChelsea vs Southampton Prediction
- Pick: Chelsea to win
- Odds: 1.22 (22Bet)
- Score prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Southampton
The hosts are the overwhelming favourites to win this match, and we expect them to do so with a considerable margin as well. They’ve beaten Southampton on 14 out of the 26 occasions, remaining unbeaten in 21 of them.
At home, Chelsea’s record gets even stronger, with them winning 5 out of the 13 games played against the guests and staying unbeaten in 10. In the Premier League as a whole, Maresca’s squad have been unbeaten against the visitors on 18 out of 23 occasions.
Chelsea vs Southampton Prediction, Betting Tip
- Pick: Total over 3 goals
- Odds: 1.43 (22Bet)
Southampton have been one of the worst sides in the league when it comes to defending goals. It’s evident by the fact that they’ve already conceded a whopping 57 so far.
Compared with the 19 goals they’ve scored, this gives them a negative goal difference of 38. However, Southampton’s goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is ranked 2nd in saves per game in the competition (4.2). They have not kept a clean sheet in their last six encounters.
Hence, our prediction (betting tip) for this match is that we’ll see more than three goals scored in total, with most of them coming from the home team’s attacking players. The reverse fixture, in December 2024, also saw a total of over three goals scored. (Southampton 1-5 Chelsea).
