Brighton vs West Ham Preview and Team News

Brighton Team News

Brighton’s April began poorly. They surrendered a 1-0 lead at Selhurst Park, ultimately losing 2-1 to Crystal Palace

The team’s struggles continued a week later when Leicester City equalized twice, resulting in a 2-2 draw at the Amex Stadium. Last Saturday, a chaotic 4-2 loss to Brentford extended their winless streak in the league to five matches. The game also featured João Pedro’s dismissal and a late hospital scare involving Jan Paul van Hecke.

Brighton’s last three league events have exposed recurring structural issues. Against Leicester, they struggled defensively whenever Pascal Groß left the double pivot to press high. This left Mats Wieffer isolated and the back four vulnerable to direct balls into the attacking zone.

The 4-2 defeat at Brentford highlighted another problem: Hürzeler’s wide 2-3-5 build-up shape requires centre-backs to cover significant lateral distances when facing counter-pressing situations. This was evident when Bryan Mbeumo exploited Lewis Dunk’s attempts to step out without proper cover on two occasions.

With João Pedro suspended, Brighton’s possession phase lacks a reliable reference point between the lines. As a result, they find themselves depending on Kaoru Mitoma’s dribbling skills and Simon Adingra’s underlaps.

It’s likely that the hosts will invert Tariq Lamptey to form a back three during build-up play, positioning Groß alongside Wieffer to draw West Ham’s midfield out of position. This could provide Mitoma the opportunity to go one-on-one against Vladimír Coufal.

Fabian Hürzeler, still the youngest head coach in the Premier League, faces the challenge of managing a significant list of absentees. This includes Igor Julio, Adam Webster, Ferdi Kadioglu, and suspended João Pedro, who received a two-game ban for a reckless foul against Brentford.

Goalkeeper Jason Steele, recovering from a hurt shoulder, hopes to return to the bench. Tariq Lamptey is expected to see limited minutes following his recovery from an ankle injury. Van Hecke has been cleared of concussion after a collision last weekend and is set to partner with Lewis Dunk in defence.

West Ham Team News

West Ham have struggled recently, recording a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on April 6, followed by a 2-1 loss at Anfield. Virgil van Dijk’s 87th-minute header broke their disciplined defence.

Six days later, a brace from Evanilson denied manager Graham Potter his first home win. The latest setback came when Southampton equalised in stoppage time, leaving West Ham winless since early March.

Under Potter’s management, his squad continues to alternate between a 4-2-3-1 formation and an asymmetric 3-2-2-3 (3-4-3) setup. A recurring issue is their ball progression. Ward-Prowse’s long diagonals remain the primary tactic when opponents press during the second phase. However, defenders Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo often bypass the midfield. This forces Jarrod Bowen to chase after aerial flicks.

The draw against Southampton highlighted their sterile dominance. They controlled possession with 57 percent but managed only three passes into the penalty area before the 80-minute mark. Currently, West Ham lacks creativity in the final third of the pitch.

In terms of injuries, Potter’s situation is challenging. Michail Antonio is still sidelined due to a leg fracture, and Crysencio Summerville is expected to be out for several weeks with a hamstring injury.

Mohammed Kudus is also dealing with groin soreness, which limited his participation to just 15 minutes against Southampton. However, centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo has recovered from a virus and participated fully in training on Monday. Left-back Emerson is managing knee discomfort but is expected to start.

Brighton vs West Ham Prediction

  • Pick: Brighton to win
  • Odds: 1.65 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Brighton 2-1 West Ham

Mitoma’s direct running into the channel outside Coufal is likely to draw Kilman across, which could unbalance West Ham’s defensive line.

Hürzeler’s men also generate an average of 0.31 expected goals (xG) per set piece, the fifth-best rate in the league. This is a notable weakness for the guests, as they’ve conceded from dead-ball situations in three of their last four matches.

When considering the home advantage at the Amex Stadium, where Brighton averages 1.94 points per game against teams in the bottom half of the table, the locals are slightly better positioned to end their losing streak.

However, Potter’s decision to implement a hybrid box midfield, where he drops Paquetá alongside Ward-Prowse under pressure, could limit the hosts’ central supply if it’s executed with discipline.

The challenge for the manager lies in squad depth. Without Summerville’s pace or Antonio’s ability to hold up the ball, West Ham struggle to stretch their opponents in the later stages of the game. This is precisely when Brighton tends to falter.

A narrow home victory, marked by defensive errors from both clubs, seems to be the most likely outcome.

Brighton vs West Ham Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Both Teams To Score
  • Odds: 1.68 (22Bet)

Brighton have not managed to keep a clean sheet against any opponent since February. West Ham last managed it on February 24. Both squads have expected goals against figures above 1.6 over their last six matches.

This suggests an entertaining game is on the horizon, with both sides likely to capitalize on each other’s defensive weaknesses. It’s reasonable to expect both teams to score on Saturday.
