Angers vs Marseille Preview and Team News

Angers Team News

French club Angers should come into this round of matches in good confidence after securing their spot in the last eight of the French Cup in midweek following a 3-1 win over Strasbourg

They have now avoided defeat in five of their last six across all competitions. Despite that, Angers have underperformed in front of goal this season, scoring just 13 goals from an xG of 18.15. Their main attacking output has come from corners, scoring an impressive four from an xG of 3.30.

Lillian Rao-Lisoa is expected to return to the first eleven this weekend after serving his ban, while Lois Diony and Adrien Hunou could also be back in contention. However, Carlens Arcus is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a calf strain, which could leave Angers light in the defensive positions.

Angers predicted lineup vs Marseille (4-3-3): Fofana; Raolisoa, Biumla, Lefort, Hanin; Aholou, Belkebla, Allevinah; Abdelli, El Melali, Lepaul.

Marseille Team News

Marseille continue to track PSG at the top of the Ligue 1 standings, but a title challenge still appears unlikely as they sit ten points adrift of the Parisians. Their form has also been inconsistent in recent weeks after winning just once across their last four across all competitions.

Their main strength has been in the attacking third this season, scoring 35 goals from an xG of 31.40. Meanwhile, Marseille are out-performing their xGA of 27.81 after allowing 20 goals.

A big bright spark for the club this season has been the performances of Mason Greenwood, scoring 13 and registering three assists in 20 Ligue 1 outings.

Marseille could welcome back key midfielders Geoffrey Kondogbia and Amine Harit from calf injuries after they return to training this week. However, Chancel Mbemba has been banned by the club and remains unavailable.

Robert De Zerbi added quality across the field in the winter transfer window, with Ismael Bennacer adding depth in the middle of the park, Luiz Felipe signing on a free, and Amine Gouiri being purchased for around £15 million from Rennes.

The high-quality additions mean that Pau Lopez, Bamo Meite and Ismael Kone have all been allowed to leave on loan. Meanwhile, Elye Wahi and Emran Soglo have been sold to Eintracht Frankfurt and Sturm Graz, respectively.

Marseille predicted lineup vs Angers (3-4-2-1): Rulli; Murillo, Balerdi, Felipe; Henrique, Rongier, Bennacer, Højbjerg, Merlin; Nadir, Rabiot; Greenwood.

Angers vs Marseille Prediction

  • Pick: Marseille to Win
  • Odds: 1.63 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Brest 0-2 Marseille

Marseille’s attacking quality looks to prove crucial this weekend. They have already netted 43 goals this term, which is their highest at this stage of the season since 1971-72.

Angers will look to play a defensive approach against their opponents on Saturday, but it is unlikely that they will keep out a Marseille side that have scored in all but one of their last 16 away matches against newly promoted sides. Therefore, the free-scoring visitors look to be the standout selection when making an Angers vs Marseille prediction.

Angers vs Marseille Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Both Teams Not to Score
  • Odds: 1.95 (22Bet)

Both teams not to score looks like the standout selection this weekend. Angers have scored just 13 goals from open play from an xG of 18.15. Despite having a good xG from corners, that looks an unlikely route to goal against a Marseille side that have conceded a low xG of 1.64 from set pieces this term.

Alternatively, Mason Greenwood’s pace caused a lot of issues from the number nine position against Lyon last weekend, and that could prove to be a useful asset against Angers this Sunday. Greenwood has already scored 13 goals this season from an xG of 11.05, and he attempts an average of 3.61 shots per 90.
