UEFA Champions League Format & What's New in 2026/27

The 36-team league phase remains in place, producing 144 matches. Each club faces eight different opponents, playing once against two teams from each pot, with four home fixtures and four away. Teams cannot meet an opponent from their own national association and can face no more than two clubs from another country.

The top eight advance directly to the round of 16. Clubs finishing ninth to 24th enter two-legged knockout phase play-offs, while those in 25th to 36th are eliminated from Europe. Every knockout round is played over two legs except the final.

Kylian Mbappé begins as the obvious Golden Boot reference point after scoring 15 last season. His total included four goals in one match and underlined the volume of chances Real Madrid can create for him, even though their campaign ended against Bayern in the quarter-finals.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia contributed ten goals and six assists on the way to UEFA’s Player of the Season award. He remains central to Paris because he can create against a settled defence or carry the ball through space when opponents commit players forward.

Harry Kane scored 14 Champions League goals last term and now leads a Bayern side that came within one goal of the final. Julián Álvarez produced ten goals and four assists for Atlético, while Michael Olise and Vinícius Júnior shared the assists lead with eight each. Arda Güler received UEFA’s Revelation of the Season award after his breakthrough campaign for Real Madrid.

African Players Who Could Shape the Tournament

Some of the edition's better stories sit further down the coefficient list. Matchday 2 brings the standout tie of the early rounds. Prediction: Paris Saint-Germain to Win at 6.15

PSG are the obvious choice as they have won two consecutive titles and are chasing a feat not achieved since Real Madrid's 2016–18 run. They return with Luis Enrique, Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé and Hakimi. Ferran Torres also gives the coach another option across the front line.

The counterargument is the price. Barcelona, Bayern and Arsenal are all close enough in the market to show that there is no dominant favourite. Arsenal completed last season’s league phase with a 100 per cent record and reached the final unbeaten, while Bayern pushed Paris to a 6-5 aggregate semi-final. Those records make the outright race far more competitive than a simple defence of the trophy.

Value Alternative: Bayern at 7.20

Bayern are the stronger alternative for those seeking a slightly higher price. Kane’s finishing gives them a reliable route through tight knockout matches, and Saibari should add energy between midfield and attack. The concern is defensive control: conceding six times across the semi-final against Paris showed how quickly elite opponents can punish open phases.

Arsenal are equally credible at 7.20 after adding Bruno Guimarães to a team that combined domestic title-winning form with Europe’s best league-phase record. Barcelona’s 6.85 price reflects their quality, but a major midfield change involving Rodri may need time to settle. These are assessments, not guarantees, and the best price can change quickly.
