Spain will play their second group stage match at the Women’s World Cup on Wednesday, and a victory could secure their progression through to the knockout round. Zambia will be looking for a response after a big defeat in their opening match.
Women’s World Cup 2023 Preview
Spain made an electric start to their Group C campaign over the weekend, as they landed a 3-0 win over Costa Rica. It was a stunning display by the European nation, and they evidentially took their foot off the accelerator in the second half after racing into a commanding advantage. Aitana Bonmati Conca and Esther Gonzalez both scored goals in the first half, in a match where Spain registered a staggering 46 shots.
Defensively, they were solid in that opening match, as they didn’t allow Costa Rica to register a single shot in response. Spain has now kept clean sheets in each of their last two matches at the World Cup, and their 3-0 win on matchday one was their biggest victory in their history at the World Cup.
The pressure will be on Zambia this week, as they weren’t able to kick on following a famous warm-up win over Germany. In fact, they were overwhelmed against Japan, as they conceded five goals. That was the second biggest defeat suffered by an African team at the World Cup.
The trends certainly go against them for this second matchday outing, as each of the last six African nations to have qualified for the World Cup have lost their second match at the World Cup. Zambia has also lost four of their previous seven matches across all competitions, conceding a staggering 23 goals over that period.
Spain vs Zambia Head to Head
This will be a first meeting between Zambia and Spain at the World Cup. However, Spain was excellent in their previous match against African opposition, as they recorded a 3-1 win over South Africa in their opening match at the 2019 World Cup.
Spain vs Zambia Prediction
Things were pretty challenging for Zambia in their opening match, and they don’t get much easier against Spain at Eden Park this week. We really struggle to overlook Spain maintaining their excellent run of form, and we see the European nation landing a comfortable 6-0 win against their African rivals.
