The route to next summer’s European Championships is beginning to get a bit clearer for some of the most prestigious sides. But, how did Saturday’s round of fixtures end up, and which sides are on the brink of making it to the showpiece event?
Group D- Denmark 1-0 Switzerland
Saturday could have been a pivotal day in Group D, as Denmark secured a hard-fought win in Copenhagen to see off Switzerland. The battle between the sides in second and third could have gone either way, but Yussuf Poulsen’s goal six minutes from time has put the Dane’s in complete control of their destiny. Switzerland will still have a chance, but they are four points behind both Denmark and Ireland.
Other Group D Result: Georgia 0-0 Ireland
Group J- Italy 2-0 Greece
It has been an excellent reinassance from the Italians and they have finally banished any lingering doubts of their capabilities on the international stage by beating Greece to secure their place in next summer’s Euro’s. The Italians had missed out on the World Cup in 2018, and have looked like a side on a mission throughout qualification. They have won all seven of their fixtures now, and this win didn’t look in doubt. Jorginho opened the scoring from the spot after the hour mark, before Federico Bernardeschi doubled the lead ten minutes from time.
Other Group J Result: Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 Finland
Group F- Norway 1-1 Spain
The Spanish remained at the top of Group F but had to settle for a point away from home against Norway. Spain took the lead early in the second half through Saul, but were pulled back in injury time after a classy finish from Joshua King. It was an underwhelming performance from the Spanish and they were made to rue missed chances. However, they keep a lead at the top of the group, but it is only five points now.
Other Group F Result: Malta 0-4 Sweden
