Key Highlights

Man United’s Away-Day Task

Erik Ten Hag and his charges will rue their missed chance to take a dominant scoreline to Sevilla on Thursday.  The Red Devils had this match won up to the 84th minute; they were leading 2-0 at Old Trafford and seemingly home and dry. However, Manchester United somehow managed to let the win slip with two spectacular own goals by Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire. The game ended square, and Erik Ten Hag and his men have it all to do away in Spain on Thursday. Domestically, Man United have bounced back from their lousy patch to win two matches on the bounce. These wins have seen Ten Hag’s side reclaim their top-four position. They now lead 4th placed Newcastle with 3 points, having played the same number of games,  Crucially, United have a six-point lead over fifth-placed Tottenham, having played a match less than the North London side. Man United are in a good overall run of form and will be confident of pulling off a win away at Sevilla.

Sevilla’s Chance to Win It at Home

Sevilla’s form is unpredictable at best and inconsistent at worst. For example, their last five matches in La Liga comprise two wins, a draw, and two defeats. This inconsistency has impacted their entire season. A team that typically fights for a top-four position is currently 13th, just five points off the relegation zone. This is mainly down to the inability of Sevilla to go on a consistent run where they can collect the points they need to compete in the top half of the La Liga table. After witnessing the come-back at Old Trafford, José Luis Mendilibar will know that his men are capable of producing moments of quality, character, and fight. This will be the requirement on Thursday when Man United come to town, with the motivation of a semi-final also weighing on the minds of the Sevilla players.

Injury Report

Sevilla

Sevilla have not reported any injuries or suspensions affecting Sevilla’s squad for Thursday's Europa League clash against Man United.

Man Utd

Ten Hag will be without centre-back Lisandro Martinez, who suffered a bad-looking hand fracture injury in the first-leg clash with Sevilla at Old Trafford. Now ruled out for the rest of the season, the defender has been a mainstay under Ten Hag, and Man United will miss his passion, physicality, and aggression. His first-choice partner, World Cup and 4-time Champions League winner Raphael Varane, is also expected to miss the match due to injury.  Forward Marcus Rashford is also a doubt for the second leg in Spain. The England international limped off during the 2-0 home win over Everton. Late tests will be conducted to establish whether he can be included in the squad to face the La Liga side. Ten Hag is also likely to be without 18-year-old forward Alejandro Garnacho, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury since March 13, 2023. He is unlikely to be fit for the clash against Sevilla on Thursday. [banner][/banner]       Man United will also be without long-term absentee central midfielder Donny van de Beek, who is nursing a knee injury and has been out for 37 matches. Other likely to face late fitness tests include Shaw (muscle), Sabitzer (knock), McTominay (unknown), and Malacia (knee).

Romania has put down an early marker in Group I, and they will be looking to continue their solid form with a second straight victory in qualification when they take on Belarus on Tuesday.

EURO 2024 Qualifier Preview

Group I looks set to be a wide-open race for the second spot. Switzerland appears to be the class in the qualifying group, but four of the nations behind the country are very evenly matched. Romania is among the nations in the hunt for that second position, as they aim to reach the EUROs for the second time in three editions.

Romania has often managed to reach the major tournament, having competed at the EUROs on five occasions. However, they missed out on EURO 2020 after falling at the playoff stage. They appeared competitive in the Nations League last year, as they finished with two wins from six matches. They kicked off their Group I campaign with a straightforward success over the weekend, as they registered a 2-0 win over Andorra. Dennis Man opened the scoring in the first half, before Denis Alibec added a second early after the restart.

Qualifying for major tournaments have been an issue for Belarus throughout their international history. That was evident as they attempted to reach the previous edition of the World Cup, as they finished bottom of the standings after winning just once in eight matches.

They came into qualification after finishing bottom of the Division C3 Nations League group, and things didn’t get much better in their Group I opener against Switzerland. Belarus was easily beaten by the talented Swiss, conceding five in their home match. The hosts managed just a single shot on target, but the game was effectively over after they trailed 3-0 at the break.

Romania vs Belarus Head to Head

Romania hasn’t lost in six previous meetings against Belarus. Over that period, they have registered four victories. The most recent of their wins was secured in November 2020 by a 5-3 scoreline. The best recent result Belarus has achieved against Romania was a 2-2 draw in October 2011.

Romania vs Belarus Prediction

Belarus already appears to be the pick to finish bottom of the Group I standings. We struggle to see them enjoying too much joy against Romania in this second round of fixtures. We expect the hosts to record a straightforward 2-0 win in front of their home fans.
