AS Roma lost 3-4 to Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico in the League Phase of the Champions League on Wednesday 14 October 2026, according to the BBC. Real Madrid trailed 3-1 until the 83rd minute, when three goals in seven minutes, all from corners, sparked a stunning comeback.

José Mourinho returned to Roma, where he won the UEFA Conference League in 2021-22 and reached the UEFA Europa League final the following season.

How Roma's 3-1 Lead Slipped Away

AS Roma looked set for a famous night. Marten de Roon struck first in the 20th minute, finishing a move crafted by Matías Soulé, but the lead lasted just five minutes before Kylian Mbappé levelled for Real Madrid. After the break, Roma took control again. Donyell Malen restored the advantage in the 51st minute and then doubled it six minutes later, giving the hosts a 3-1 cushion that seemed to put the result beyond doubt.

Real Madrid refused to accept it. Carlos Espí pulled one back in the 83rd minute and changed the mood of the match. Two minutes later, Arda Güler's corner found Endrick, who headed in to make it 3-3. Then, with the clock reaching 90 minutes, Güler delivered again, and Antonio Rüdiger finished from close range to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Mbappé had a second-half goal ruled out for offside, and Managing Madrid says the flag was correctly raised. Malen's second was initially flagged offside, but a VAR check showed Real Madrid's Federico Valverde had played him onside, so it stood.

How the Comeback Was Built

Malen's first finish came off a deflection after Vinícius Júnior gave the ball away with a failed flick. Espí's goal came from the second phase of a corner, as he tapped in the rebound after Gollini parried Endrick's header.

Gian Piero Gasperini brought on fresh defenders Leonardo Balerdi and Konstantinos Koulierakis, but Real Madrid coach José Mourinho's changes — Endrick, Güler and Espí — flipped the game.

Milestones and the Standings

Mbappé made his 100th Champions League appearance, and his 72nd goal in the competition moved him fifth on the competition's all-time list, past Raúl on 71.

After Matchday 2, AS Roma are 25th on one point from two matches (1D 1L), one place outside the knockout play-off positions, while Real Madrid are sixth on six points from two (2W).
