Three Key Storylines of the 2025/26 Primeira Liga Season

1. Farioli leads Porto to an unexpected league title

Porto entered the 2025/26 Primeira Liga season as outsiders, widely viewed as the third-strongest side behind Sporting CP and Benfica, both of whom competed in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. However, Farioli moulded Porto into a title-winning side built on an elite defence, with goalkeeper Diogo Costa at its heart.

They finished with the league's best defensive record, conceding just 18 goals in 34 matches (0.53 per game). Despite losing their top striker, Samu Aghehowa, to an ACL injury midway through the campaign, Porto clinched the title with a 1-0 win over Alverca with two matches still to play.

2. Benfica’s unbeaten league campaign ends trophyless

In most leagues, going unbeaten throughout an entire league campaign would be enough to win the title, but that wasn’t the case for Benfica in 2025/26.

Led by the iconic José Mourinho, who took charge following Bruno Lage’s dismissal in September 2025, Benfica went through the entire league campaign without defeat. However, they recorded 11 draws — only four teams recorded more, and each of them finished with 12.

Those dropped points ultimately proved decisive, as Porto and Sporting converted more of their chances into wins. Benfica allowed José Mourinho to return to Real Madrid for the 2026/27 campaign, so Marco Silva is now the man in charge for the upcoming season.

3. Torreense's Cinderella cup run

Torreense's remarkable Taça de Portugal triumph was one of the biggest stories of the season. Despite competing in the second division, they lifted the trophy after defeating Sporting in the final.

Torreense lost the promotion/relegation play-off to Casa Pia, meaning they’ll divide their 2026/27 campaign between Europe and Portugal’s second-tier league.

It marked the second time in Portuguese football history that a second-division club has qualified for European competition by winning the domestic cup. Coincidentally, they’ll also be one of two second-division clubs competing in Europe in 2026/27, alongside Icelandic side Vestri.

O Clássico, FC Porto vs Benfica, remains the most-watched fixture in Portuguese football. The 2025/26 edition at Estádio da Luz attracted 66,366 spectators — the highest attendance of the entire season. The two rivals will meet again in September 2026 and February 2027.

Another game to watch is the Lisbon derby — Sporting CP vs Benfica. Their second meeting of the season, scheduled for 9 May 2027, the second-to-last round of the campaign, could very well be the decisive match in the title race.

Elsewhere, Portuguese football fans will be eagerly awaiting Torreense's debut in the 2026/27 UEFA Europa League. When assessing the favourites for the 2026/27 Primeira Liga title, three teams stand out: FC Porto, Sporting CP, and Benfica.

Porto — Defending Champions

Porto won the title on the back of the division's tightest defence (18 goals conceded). Farioli remains in charge and now benefits from a full pre-season to build on that success.

The team will need to balance the UCL alongside the Primeira Liga — the fixtures will be demanding but Porto's squad depth, already impressive, should be strengthened further during the summer window.

It’s one thing to have José Mourinho on the bench, and a completely different one is to have Marco Silva. As attractive as his brand of football might be, Silva has never been regarded as an elite manager in the Premier League, nor has he managed a title contender. If there’s one team capable of pulling off an upset in the 2026/27 Primeira Liga, it’s Sporting Braga. Primeira Liga Relegation Battle — Who Goes Down?

Unlike the title race, where there are three favourites to go all the way, several sides appear likely to spend the season fighting to remain in the top flight.

As a reminder, the bottom two teams in the 2026/27 Primeira Liga standings are relegated directly to Liga 2, while the 16th-placed team plays a play-off against the third-placed team from Liga 2.

Newly promoted Marítimo and Académico de Viseu are the obvious candidates for an immediate return to the second tier, but there are different reasons for concern.

Marítimo will play their home matches at the Estádio da Madeira, which has a capacity of just 5,200. While the venue is well known for its unique setting, it is unlikely to provide the intimidating atmosphere that many established Primeira Liga clubs enjoy.

Académico de Viseu, meanwhile, are preparing for their first-ever season in the Primeira Liga. The lack of top-flight experience could prove a significant disadvantage.

Two other teams that could find themselves dragged into the relegation battle are Alverca and Casa Pia. Alverca spent most of the 2025/26 season in the bottom half of the table and have yet to strengthen sufficiently during the summer transfer window.

Casa Pia, meanwhile, needed a two-legged play-off to salvage their top-flight status against Torreense, and at least on paper, they once again appear to be among the weakest sides in the competition.
