The Best Football Players in the World by Position: GK, DEF, MID and FWD
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) retained the Champions League on penalties against Arsenal, Arsenal won the Premier League, and Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the World Cup final. Those three competitions supply most of the evidence for our 2026 world football rankings by position.
This guide names the best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward as of 12 October 2026, using player stats and ratings alongside the FIFA, UEFA and domestic awards. The Ballon d'Or ceremony takes place on 26 October in London, so the Ballon d'Or verdicts are still to come.
How We Rank the Best Football Players by Position
We weigh five things: individual awards, trophies and championships won, appearances and minutes played, position-specific statistics and performance at the 2026 World Cup. Awards carry the most weight because they reflect votes from coaches, captains, journalists and technical observers.
The ranking covers the 2025-26 season and the 2026 World Cup, so 2025 awards such as the Ballon d'Or and The Best FIFA awards, which mostly reflect the 2024-25 season, count for less than this season's honours. Statistics settle close calls, and leadership and consistency break ties.
Our picks are editorial judgements, and the table shows each pick with his closest challengers. The player ratings are season-long Sofascore averages for 2025-26 and are only comparable between players in the same position, so a goalkeeper’s 7.10 and a forward’s 7.98 should not be read against each other.
| Position | Our pick | World Cup contribution | Sofascore rating 2025-26 | Closest challengers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | Unai Simón | Simón won the World Cup Golden Glove with seven clean sheets. | 7.1 | Joan García, David Raya |
| Defender | William Saliba | Saliba started in central defence on France’s run to the semi-finals, where a back injury ended his tournament. | 7.17 | Gabriel, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes |
| Midfielder | Rodri | Rodri won the World Cup with Spain and the World Cup Golden Ball. | 7.59 | Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes |
| Forward | Harry Kane | Kane scored six goals as England reached the semi-finals. | 7.98 | Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé |
Best Goalkeepers in the World
Unai Simón of Athletic Club is our pick as the best goalkeeper in the world today. He won the World Cup Golden Glove, and Spain conceded once in eight matches across the tournament. The Ballon d'Or's Yashin Trophy is still to be decided, and ten goalkeepers are on the shortlist.
Top Goalkeepers and Their Key Strengths
Simón kept seven clean sheets in eight World Cup matches. Joan García, in his first season at Barcelona, won the Zamora Trophy after conceding 21 goals in 30 matches. David Raya won a third straight Premier League Golden Glove with 19 clean sheets in 37 matches.
Gianluigi Donnarumma, now at Manchester City, won The Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper award for 2025, but he is not on this year's Yashin shortlist. Africa has three entries on that list. Yassine Bounou of Al Hilal won the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year award for 2025. Édouard Mendy of Al Ahli and Cape Verde's Vozinha, now at Colo-Colo, are also nominated.
Goalkeeping Statistics and Performance Metrics
Clean sheets and goals conceded per match are the standard measures, and the Zamora Trophy uses the goals-to-matches ratio. By that measure, García (0.7 per match) led La Liga, and he saved 77.9 per cent of the shots he faced. Simón ranks first because his numbers came against World Cup opposition, including a World Cup record run of 650 minutes without conceding.
Best Defenders in the World
William Saliba is our best defender in the world. Arsenal conceded 27 goals in 38 league matches on the way to the title, eight fewer than any other side. Among centre-back pairs who started more than five matches together, Saliba and Gabriel recorded the best clean sheet rate.
Both centre-backs made the PFA Team of the Year, and Gabriel also made the Champions League Team of the Season. It is a close call, but Saliba's passing and one-on-one defending settle it in his favour. Under our method, Saliba ranks above Hakimi because his defensive metrics and passing consistency in Arsenal’s title season outweigh Hakimi’s 2025 awards, which reflected the previous campaign.
Top Centre-Backs and Full-Backs
Saliba completed 92.9 per cent of his passes, the third-best accuracy of any player with at least 2,000 attempts. Gabriel scored three goals and made four assists. The Champions League Team of the Season placed Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes, Gabriel and Marcos Llorente in defence.
Achraf Hakimi is the best full-back. He was named in The Best FIFA Men's 11 for 2025 and won the CAF Player of the Year award, the first defender to win it since 1973. CAF credited a 2025 in which he won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Ligue 1 and Coupe de France with PSG. Pau Cubarsí won the World Cup Young Player award after playing every minute of Spain's eight matches, in which they conceded once.
Defensive Statistics and Tactical Impact
Tackles and interceptions measure the defending a player does once danger arrives. Adrien Truffert of Bournemouth made more tackles (103) and interceptions (48) than any other Premier League full-back. Saliba was dribbled past only seven times, and only Virgil van Dijk (two) and Ezri Konsa (four) were beaten less often. That is why we rate Saliba above Truffert: his defending stops attacks before they reach a tackle, which suits a back line that sits high and builds play from the back.
Gabriel kept 17 clean sheets, more than any other Premier League defender, and Arsenal conceded once every 138 minutes with him on the pitch. His attacking numbers matter too, since only Jurriën Timber and Patrick Dorgu were involved in more Premier League goals among defenders.
Best Midfielders in the World
Rodri is our pick as the best midfielder in the world. He won the World Cup Golden Ball. Among Barcelona’s summer transfers, he arrived from Manchester City in a £65.4 million (~US$88.5 million) move on a contract running to 2030. At the 2026 World Cup, he completed 655 of his 705 passes (92.9 per cent) and made 22 tackles.
Top Defensive, Central and Attacking Midfielders
Among defensive midfielders, Rodri leads. Moisés Caicedo of Chelsea is the closest Premier League rival, with 148 tackles and interceptions in the 2025 calendar year, the latest full-year figure, more than any other Premier League player. Vitinha is the best central midfielder after being named Player of the Match in the Champions League final. Bruno Fernandes leads the attacking midfielders. He won the Premier League Player of the Season award with eight goals.
Michael Olise sits alongside Vitinha and Declan Rice in the Champions League Team of the Season.
Creativity, Passing and Ball Progression
Fernandes made 21 assists, a Premier League record that passed Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, and his 136 chances created were 58 more than any other Premier League player. Only Mesut Özil (146 in 2015-16) has created more in a season since 2003-04.
For passing and ball progression, Elliot Anderson, then at Nottingham Forest, completed the most passes (2,038) and made the most line-breaking passes (376) of any Premier League central midfielder. Rodri and Vitinha are close on technique, and Rodri's World Cup record settles it.
Best Forwards in the World
Harry Kane is the best forward in the world. He scored 61 goals in 51 appearances in all competitions for Bayern Munich and won the European Golden Shoe for a second time. His 36 Bundesliga goals made him the top scorer in Europe's major leagues, and Bayern won the title again. Kane ranks above Dembélé because his 61-goal season and Golden Shoe in 2025-26 outweigh Dembélé’s 2025 Ballon d’Or, which recognised the prior season.
Top Strikers, Wingers and Second Strikers
Among strikers, Kane leads Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. Mbappé won a second World Cup Golden Boot with 10 goals, becoming the all-time World Cup scoring leader with 22 goals. Haaland scored 27 league goals in 35 appearances to win a third Premier League Golden Boot.
Lamine Yamal and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia head the wingers. Kvaratskhelia won the Champions League Player of the Season award with 10 goals, six assists and a top speed of 33.7 km/h. Ousmane Dembélé, the reigning Ballon d'Or winner and The Best FIFA Men's Player for 2025, plays as a false nine for PSG, dropping deeper than a traditional centre-forward to link play.
Goals, Assists and Attacking Contributions
The top scorer in the Golden Shoe table was Kane (72 points), ahead of Haaland (54) and Mbappé (50). All three play in top-five leagues, where each goal counts double, so the points gaps simply reflect their goal totals of 36, 27 and 25. Fernandes was the Premier League's top assist provider with 21, and Yamal's 11 assists led La Liga. Finishing separates Kane from the rest, with 36 league goals from 31 matches.
Best Young Football Players to Watch in Each Position
Among the youngsters, Bayern Munich’s Jonas Urbig is the young goalkeeper to watch. He made the Bundesliga’s Under-21 Team of the Season after 14 league appearances, keeping clean sheets in each of his first three starts.
Cubarsí, 19, is the best young defender, and Yamal, 19, is the best young forward. In midfield, our pick is Lennart Karl of Bayern Munich, 18, who made 44 appearances, scored 12 goals and made eight assists. Ibrahim Maza of Bayer Leverkusen, 20, is next, with five goals in 44 appearances for his club in 2025-26.
The Kopa Trophy, for the best prospects under 21, has ten nominees, with Yamal chasing a third win. Nico O'Reilly, an academy graduate at Manchester City, won the Premier League Young Player award with five goals and three assists. Africa's best young player was Othmane Maamma of Watford.
Individual Awards and Recognition: FIFA, UEFA and Domestic Leagues
The Best FIFA Men’s Player for 2025 went to Dembélé, so he holds the most recent FIFA best player award. The 2026 FIFA Awards, which move to Dubai, have not yet been presented. UEFA no longer runs a separate UEFA best player award: its Men's Player of the Year prize ended when UEFA became co-organiser of the Ballon d'Or in 2024.
Its awards now go to the best player in each UEFA competition, and Kvaratskhelia was named Champions League Player of the Season. Domestically, Fernandes won the Premier League Player of the Season, and Yamal won La Liga's. In the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise was named Player of the Season after contributing 15 goals and 19 assists. In Serie A, Inter’s Federico Dimarco won the MVP award with a record 18 assists and six goals. In Ligue 1, PSG’s Ousmane Dembélé was voted Player of the Season for the second year running.
The Ballon d'Or shortlist has 10 PSG players among the 30 nominees. Previews name Kane, Yamal, Mbappé, Rodri and Kvaratskhelia as the leading contenders, with Kane the bookmakers’ favourite.
How the Best Players Compare Across Different Leagues
A player comparison across leagues needs adjustment. The Golden Shoe doubles goals from the top five leagues and gives 1.5 points for goals in leagues ranked sixth to 22nd, so Dion Beljo's 31 goals in Croatia earned 46.5 points. Outside Europe, Julián Quiñones scored 33 goals in the Saudi Pro League, one more than Ivan Toney.
Mohamed Salah has the strongest claim to being the best player in Premier League history: 193 Premier League goals, 191 of them for Liverpool, and the record 47 goal involvements in a 38-match season. Only two Premier League legends, Henry and Salah, have won four Golden Boots, and Haaland has three.
Any list of African best players now spans Saudi Arabia, where Bounou (Al Hilal), Mendy (Al Ahli) and Sadio Mané (Al Nassr) all play, and Europe, where stars such as Achraf Hakimi (PSG) and Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray) continue to shine. Hakimi is the current African Player of the Year, after Victor Osimhen in 2023 and Ademola Lookman in 2024.
Salah, among the most famous African players, finished his last Liverpool season with seven goals and seven assists before joining Trabzonspor in Turkey on a deal worth €17 million (~US$19.6 million) per season. Trabzonspor says the two-year deal is a Turkish league record, a sign that top contracts and salaries now reach beyond the top five leagues.
Rising Stars Challenging Established Football Superstars
Yamal is the clearest challenge to the superstars, with 16 league goals, 11 assists and the La Liga Player of the Season award as an 18-year-old in 2025-26. Among the veterans, Lionel Messi, 39, is still on the shortlist with his 17th nomination, one behind Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 18.
Rising stars beyond Yamal are also challenging established names. Cubarsí, 19, played every minute of Spain’s World Cup triumph and won the Young Player award, marking him out as a successor to veterans like Gerard Piqué. In midfield, Lennart Karl, 18, broke into Bayern’s first team with 12 goals and 8 assists, showing he can rival seasoned internationals. PSG, who now have 10 of the 30 Ballon d’Or nominees, also signed Ferran Torres, but the spotlight is shifting toward these younger talents.
How Player Roles and Modern Tactics Affect Positional Rankings
Modern roles blur the position labels. Full-backs such as Hakimi and Nuno Mendes create and score, and wingers such as Kvaratskhelia and Yamal combine goals with assists.. Argentina did not manage a shot on target in 120 minutes of the final, so Rodri's value shows in how his team defends as much as in his passing.
Passing, dribbling and pace now matter for defenders as well, because teams build play from the back. Rankings by position therefore reward complete players, which is why Saliba's passing lifts him above defenders with bigger tackle counts, such as Bournemouth's Adrien Truffert.
