The battle for vital points in the race to achieve European Championship qualification continues on Tuesday, as two of the bottom placed sides in Group A lock horns. Erling Haaland’s Norway will need to register a first win in the group stage to put pressure on the top two against Cyprus.
EURO 2024 Qualifier Preview
It has been a disappointing start to EURO qualification for Norway, as they already sit three points off the top two places. Meanwhile, they are eight points adrift of the team currently sitting top of the Group A standings. Norway has lost two of their opening three matches in the group, with their only point being picked up following a draw against Georgia.
A response will be needed from Norway on Tuesday as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Scotland over the weekend. Norway appeared to be heading toward maximum points in that match following Erling Haaland’s opener, before the Scots stunned their hosts with two goals in the space of three minutes at the end of the match. Haaland could be key to his nation’s chances once again on Tuesday.
Cyprus already appear to be the massive outsiders in the race for qualification this year, as they sit bottom of the standings. However, they have played a game fewer than their rivals this week, and could move up to fourth if they are able to get a famous victory on the road.
They come into this match after losing each of their opening two matches in Group A, with the most recent of those coming at home over the weekend. That loss was suffered against Georgia, and means that Cyprus have now gone four international matches without a victory.
Norway vs Cyprus Head to Head
Norway has a dominant record in this fixture, as they have won all of their previous eleven encounters against Cyprus. Interestingly, each of the last three have come by a 2-0 scoreline. The most recent of those was a 2-0 success in November 2018 in a Nations League fixture in the road.
Norway vs Cyprus Prediction
Norway have flattered to deceive in the opening rounds of matches in qualification, and that needs to change if they are to finish in one of the top two qualifying spots. This looks like a good opportunity to get off the mark, and we would be surprised if they aren’t able to claim maximum points at home.
