Between 2003 and 2006, Serbia and Montenegro played as one country. However, following a referendum in 2006, Montenegro have played as an independent nation on the football field. Serbia has qualified for three World Cups since then, but they have failed to reach the European Championships. In the previous qualifying campaign, Serbia managed to pick up just five wins from their ten matches.

However, they come into this year’s qualification in much better form. They enjoyed an excellent run in the Nations League last year, as they qualified for Division A for the first time after winning four of their six matches. Serbia also returned to action following their World Cup exit at the group stage in January by picking up a 2-1 win away from home against the United States.

Montenegro is yet to qualify for a major tournament as an independent nation. In the previous qualifying campaign, they failed to pick up a single victory from eight matches as they finished fifth in their group. They also come into this international break in poor form after failing to win in their previous four matches.

Over that run, they have fallen to three defeats, with their only positive result coming in the form of a 2-2 draw against Slovakia. The opening two matches for Montenegro will be key for any chance that they have of finishing in the top two places.

This will be the third historic meeting between the two nations on the football field. Both previous clashes came in the Nations League in 2018, with Serbia winning 2-0 away from home, before claiming a 2-1 success in their home fixture a month later.

Montenegro’s form has been extremely poor over the past 12 months or so, and that would be a huge concern coming into this qualification campaign. Serbia look blessed with talent across the field, and there was slight disappointment that they didn’t go further at the World Cup.
