Contrary to our prediction, Ole Gunnar Solskaer’s men completed a Premier League double over derby rivals Man City for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, last achieving it a whole decade ago.
United’s monumental triumph was a personal misery for City’s goalkeeper Ederson, who was having a teeeeerrible night and ended up gifting Solskaer’s side two goals.
The normally reliable Brazilian keeper allowed Anthony Martial’s brilliant shot to roll under his body from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick half an hour into the match. Fun fact: Martial is now only the second Manchester United player to score in three consecutive starts in Premier League Manchester derbies and the first since Eric Cantona netted in five in a row between March 1993 and April 1996.

And just when we thought Ederson’s rough night was finally over, he did the unthinkable. With seconds left he threw a clearance straight into Scott McTominay, who struck first time, sending a stunning finish straight into the back of Man City’s net. Absolute scenes at Old Trafford.

But it wasn’t just Ederson. Pep Guardiola’s entire squad were struggling on Sunday night. Although they had 73% possession, they had just one attempt at United’s goal in the first half, which is their lowest tally in the first half of a Premier League match since October 2018. City have now suffered their seventh defeat of the season, making 2019/20 the worst season in Guardiola’s managerial career.

VAR intervened to rule out a Sergio Aguero goal to offside and apart from that, the Citizens did not achieve much of anything on the pitch, whilst Man Utd have taken their unbeaten run to 10 games in all competitions.
