Lyon will be looking for a better performance this weekend after they suffered defeat in their opening match of the season. Meanwhile, Montpellier will be looking to build on a home draw on matchday one.
Ligue 1 Preview
A lot was expected by Lyon before a ball was kicked this season after a hugely disappointing campaign last term. However, Laurent Blanc is already coming under pressure at the club, as there were few signs in their opening match that they look capable of improving on their seventh-placed finish last term.
The French side were exceptionally wasteful in the final third in their opening match, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Strasbourg. Lyon trailed 2-0, before Nicolas Tagliafico scored a late consolation to threaten a comeback. However, Lyon ended the match having dominated the possession, and they registered seven shots on target. They will need to be more clinical in the final third when they play their first match in front of their own fans this weekend.
Montpellier would have been happy enough with their finish in the Ligue 1 standings last term, as they concluded the campaign in 12th place overall. However, they will be looking to defend better in the top flight this term, as they conceded 62 goals in 38 matches last season.
But, there was little evidence of their defensive improvement in their opening match, as they drew 2-2 against Le Harve. Montpellier appeared to be heading toward maximum points following the second of Akor Adams’ goals with half an hour remaining. However, they were denied maximum points as Le Harve equalised with just seconds remaining.
Lyon vs Montpellier Head to Head
Lyon have landed victories in each of their last four matches against Montpellier. They will be looking to win five on the bounce against their rivals for the first time on Saturday. Over the last ten meetings between the sides, Lyon have scored 42 goals.
Lyon vs Montpellier Prediction
Lyon may have been underwhelming in their opening game of the season, but they are without a defeat in their first home match of the season in each of their last 22. Over that period, they have recorded 16 wins, and we expect that trend to continue on Saturday. Therefore, we will be siding with a home win.
