It was a very weird weekend in La Liga this past weekend. That was because both Real Madrid and Barcelona didn’t play as their proposed fixture was called off due to potential unrest in Catalonia. However, one side took full advantage of their missed fixture and jumped to the top of the table.
Granada 1-0 Real Betis
Granada reached the summit of La Liga on Sunday afternoon as they brilliantly won against Real Betis at home. Alvaro Vadillo scored the only goal of the game, as the unlikely league leaders leap-frogged both Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Atletico Madrid 2-0 Athletic Bilbao
Atletico’s attacking problems were silenced on Saturday afternoon as they were able to claim a valuable three points against Bilbao. Saul Niguez and Alvaro Morata scored either side of half time to wrap up the three points. However, Diego Simeone’s side were far from their best and only had eight shots in the entire match.
Villarreal 4-1 Alaves
The Yellow Submarine managed to score three late goals to ensure they took maximum points away from their clash with Alaves. Karl Ekambi opened the scoring after 13 minutes, before Lucas Perez levelled the scores five minutes into the second half. However, further goals from Ekambi, Gerard Moreno and Javier Ontiveros ensured all three points.
Osasuna 3-1 Valencia
Rodrigo went from hero to villain for the travelling Valencia fans. He opened the scoring before being sent off ten minutes later. Osasuna took full advantage of having the extra man as Oier Sanjurjo, Ruben Garcia and Pervis Estupinan found the net.
