The action in the Europa League resumes this weekend, as important playoff action will determine the sides that will progress through to the next round. AS Roma will have aspirations of winning the competition, but Feyenoord will have home field advantage for this opening leg.
Europa League Preview
Feyenoord would have taken confidence from their performances in the Champions League earlier this season, but ultimately they lacked the quality to progress through to the next round after finishing four points behind Lazio. However, the Dutch side won two of their six matches in the premier competition, scoring an impressive nine goals.
Roma were forced to settle for a spot in the playoff round after finishing second in their Europa League group before Christmas. The Italian giants were widely expected to win Group G, but they could only claim victories in four of their six matches. Their away form was poor throughout that campaign, after winning just once from three on the road.
Their record on the road is even more concerning when you take into account their defeat in the Europa League final last term. Roma have landed just one victory in their last eight away from home in the competition, with four draws having been played out over that period.
However, Romelu Lukaku could be a standout player at this level, as he has failed to score in just one of his last 17 appearances in the Europa League. Over that period, he has netted a staggering 20 goals, meaning that only three players have netted more than the striker since the Europa League rebrand in 2009.
Feyenoord vs Roma Head to Head
This is the third time in three seasons that Roma and Feyenoord have clashed in a knockout stage of a European competition. Roma landed Europa Conference League success against their Dutch rivals in 2022, before landing a 4-2 aggregate success in the Europa League quarterfinals last season. But, prior to their Conference League success, Roma had gone two without defeat against Feyenoord.
Feyenoord vs Roma Prediction
This match will see familiar foes re-oppose each other, with a place in the next round of the Europa League at stake. Roma have an excellent record against their Dutch rivals, and we find it hard to overlook them progressing over two legs. However, this first leg could see the sides play out an entertaining draw in the Netherlands.
