The pressure will be on England this summer, as the Lionesses come into the World Cup as the reigning European Champions. However, winning a first Women’s World Cup will be a massive challenge for the team this summer, as they will need to contend without captain Leah Williamson, as well as Fran Kirby and Beth Mead. England will also have a point to prove in their opening match, as they have underperformed in recent internationals, and have failed to score in each of their last three matches.
However, the Lionesses are one of just three nations that have reached the quarterfinals in each of the last four editions of the tournament, and one of just two nations that have reached the last four in the last two World Cups.
Haiti will be making their first appearance at the World Cup this summer, and they face a huge challenge to make it out of a very competitive Group D. The nation will be looking for a much better summer this year, as they crashed out in the group stage of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship last summer.
But, their form this year has been solid. Haiti has won four of their six internationals in 2023, which includes big-scoring wins over Senegal and Malta. However, their winning run was halted in their final prep match, as they were beaten 2-1 by South Korea on July 8.
