Manchester City will look to book their spot in the last eight of the FA Cup on Tuesday evening. Pep Guardiola’s side travels to Championship opposition, as Bristol City look to spring one of the shocks of the competition this season.

Despite the rumblings off the pitch, Manchester City could yet achieve a treble this season. However, Guardiola will likely rank the FA Cup low on the targets for the remainder of the season, as City could have a five-point gap to overturn on Arsenal after Wednesday night’s fixture in the top-flight. But, City has an excellent record in domestic cup competitions since the Spanish manager’s arrival, and a place in the last eight looks like a solid chance.
City has picked up ten wins on the bounce away from home in the FA Cup, which is the longest away record in the competition’s history. Guardiola’s record in domestic cup competitions is also hard to ignore, as he beat teams from lower leagues in 34 from 35 previous meetings. His only defeat over that period was suffered against Wigan Athletic in 2018.
Bristol City will see this fixture as an excellent opportunity to showcase its credentials. They currently sit in the middle of the standings in the Championship, but they could yet make a late charge for a playoff spot. They come into this fixture having gone three without defeat, which includes a 1-0 home win in their previous fixture.
Bristol saw off West Bromwich Albion in the previous round, and Swansea City in the third round. Their record at this stage of the competition is also concerning, as they have been eliminated at this stage in 13 from 14 appearances. Their only win over that period in the fifth round was secured against Leeds United in 1973-74.

This will be the first time that the two sides have clashed in the FA Cup. The last two meetings between the sides came at the semi-final stage of the EFL Cup in 2018, with City landing victories both home and away against Bristol City.

Bristol must be excellent defensively in this tie to stand any chance of progression. It will be interesting to see the City team that Guardiola goes for, but we still expect the reigning Premier League champions to have far too much quality.
