Turkey was tipped up as a potential dark horse contender prior to EURO 2020. However, their group stage exit means that they will likely need to work hard to build up that faith again. They will kick off their Group D campaign on Saturday with an away game against Armenia.
EURO 2025 Qualifier Preview
Group D looks set to be one of the most interesting qualification groups for the European Championships. Despite a disappointing showing at EURO 2020, Turkey will be the most popular choice to push Croatia closest for top spot in the group, but they will need to make a quick start to avoid getting dragged into a scrap with Wales for a place in the top two positions.
Turkey missed out on a place at the World Cup at the end of last year, despite having a very strong record in qualification. They won six of the eleven matches that they played, and scored a national World Cup qualification-record of 28 goals. But, their overall record in 2022 was mixed with highs and lows. They recorded wins against Scotland and Czech Republic, but were beaten by the Faroe Islands and held to a draw by Luxembourg.
Armenia will be one of the more unlikely selections to make it out of Group D, as they look to reach a major tournament for the first time. However, their confidence may be high, as they recorded three wins from ten matches in their previous EURO qualification campaign, which was the second-highest tally that they have ever recorded.
However, 2022 was more about its low points, as they were relegated back to Nations League Division C after winning just once in six matches. Their overall record in the calendar year was also disappointing, as they registered just three wins from ten matches.
Armenia vs Turkey Head to Head
There have only previously been two meetings between these two nations. Both previous clashes were won by Turkey, and came in the 2010 World Cup qualification campaign. The latest of those victories was a 2-0 success in Istanbul.
Armenia vs Turkey Prediction
It looks challenging to see past a Turkey victory in this opening match in Group D, as they have been in steady form against lesser opposition over the past 12 months. We could see them recording a 2-0 win on the road on Saturday.
