Europa League Overview

The UEFA Europa League is a yearly football competition that involves sides that did not qualify to play in the Champions League. It’s the second tier of European club football, ranking just below the Champions League.

Clubs qualify to play in the Europa League in various ways, mainly depending on how they perform in their national league cup competitions. Since its beginning in 1971, several countries have lifted the coveted trophy in the tournament. Teams from Spain, Italy, and England have the highest number of wins.

What is the Europa League?

The Europa League is a second-tier annual competition in European club football. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) organizes the tournament each season.

Clubs winning their domestic cups get automatic tickets to play in the tournament. Some teams that finish in runner-up positions in their domestic leagues can also get a chance to play in the Europa League, depending on that country’s number of slots allocated. UEFA Conference League title holders also qualify for the competition.

History of the Europa League

The Europa League’s history is extensive. It began in 1971 as the UEFA Cup, which replaced the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which ran between 1955 and 1971. The rules and format of the competition changed with the formation of the Europa League.

In the beginning, the tournament was entirely knockout, and the final was also two-legged. During the 1997-98 season, it was decided that there would only be a one-off final match.

English clubs dominated the UEFA Cup during the early seasons. The first final of the tournament was between Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers, where the former became the first to win the title. Liverpool was the second English team to win the cup in the 1972-73 season. They would later have a second win in the 1975-76 season.

Spain and Sweden dominated the 1980s, with some of their clubs grabbing the title multiple times. Real Madrid had two consecutive wins in 1985 and 1986, while IFK Göteborg lifted the trophy in 1982 and 1987. Sevilla and Valencia won the cup a total of 3 times for Spain during the 2000s.

Spanish clubs now have some of the highest number of victories in the Europa League. Teams from England and Italy have also made their mark in the tournament by winning the trophy several times.

How the Europa League Logos Have Changed Over the Years

Europa League Format and Structure

Teams qualify in various ways. UEFA Conference League winners and domestic cup holders are automatically eligible. Runners-up and play-off winners are also eligible for the competition.

The Europa League structure includes both league and knockout phases. It begins with some preliminary elimination play-offs followed by the round of 16. During the group stages, each side plays 8 games. Four are at home, and four are away matches.

The top 8 teams automatically advance to the round of 16. The clubs that position between 9th and 24th participate in knockout play-offs to find 8 more winners to join the RO16. Play-off losers and teams ranking 25 to 36 are eliminated

All knockout matches are two-legged ties. After the quarter-finals and semi-finals, the final game, which takes place at a neutral venue, follows. Eventually, the winner gets a chance to play in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.
