The EFL is arguably one of the most influential cup competitions in football today. Even smaller teams have a chance to reach the finals, which makes the competition particularly important.

This article can help you learn all you need to know about the English Football League (EFL) Cup. It’ll equip you with knowledge of the history of the Cup, top teams and players, fixtures, and betting tips and odds courtesy of 22Bet.

What is the EFL Cup?

The EFL Cup is one of the top-tier competitions that domestic football teams in England and fans all over the world look forward to every year. The League Cup is one of the top 3 honours of the local football season and is known for debuting young talent.

Organised by the EFL, the Cup captures not only the Premier League teams but also other top clubs in the other three EFL divisions: Championship, League One, and League Two.

The competition starts in August each year and is a knock-out competition with seven rounds involving 92 top teams. Clubs enter the contest during different rounds depending on their ranking and qualifications in other major leagues.

Premier League clubs join the competition during the second round, while Champions League and Europa League qualifying clubs enter during round three.

The EFL Cup final match takes place at Wembley Stadium, and the winner gets a ticket straight to the next season’s UEFA Europa League.

Histories From Dramatic Moments in an EFL Cup Matches

History and Overview of the EFL Cup

As one of the three major honors of the domestic football season, the EFL Cup was conceived and implemented in 1960-61 by Alan Hardaker.

The EFL Cup’s history has seen the reorganisation of the league over the years. The Cup is considered an important debut platform for numerous players, including Cesc Fàbregas, David Beckham, Theo Walcott, John Terry, Wayne Rooney, and Jermain Defoe, just to name a few.

The first team to ever lift the EFL trophy was Aston Villa after defeating Rotherham United in the 1960-61 final. The club would later emerge at the top again in the 1970s with two wins in 1975 and 1977. Today, Aston Villa ranks as one of the most successful clubs, having won the EFL Cup 5 times.

Liverpool ranks as the most successful club in the EFL Cup competition with the most wins. Liverpool have won 10 titles, but it seems that this is not the end. The club lifted the last trophy with a 1-0 win against Chelsea with a goal from Virgil van Dijk during extra time.

The team won their first EFL Cup in 1981 and had three more successful wins. It wasn’t until 1995 that the club won the contest again. Liverpool would go on to be the EFL Cup holder several more times over the years.

Another top team that has earned recognition in the EFL Cup is Manchester City. The club has won a record 8 times to become one of the most successful clubs in the competition.

They won their first title in 1970 and the second in 1971. The club was in a slump for the most part of the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. Their successive EFL Cup win came in 2014, with the 8th win being in 2021.

Another successful team to watch out for is Manchester United, which has won the Cup 6 times. The club celebrated their first win in 1992 and their most recent in 2023. The team has been runner-up at least 4 times over the years.

Chelsea also ranks among the most successful clubs after winning the EFL Cup several times. After 1965, their success dwindled until the late 1990s, when they got their second win. The club celebrated its 5th win in 2015.

Format and Rules of the EFL Cup

The EFL Cup format features 92 teams from both the Premier League and the EFL divisions. It is a knockout competition consisting of seven rounds, with some higher-ranked teams entering the contest during later rounds.

The first two rounds are divided into the North and South sections and the bye system that gives preferential status to some teams.

Premier League Clubs join the competition during the second round, and teams that qualify for the Europa or Champions Leagues enter the third round. All the matches except for the semi-finals are single-leg ties.
