McTominay Had a Successful Heart Procedure; Expected to Rest for Two Weeks

Napoli have confirmed that Scott McTominay underwent a successful heart procedure on Tuesday. The Scotland midfielder had an ablation carried out at Spire Manchester Hospital after being diagnosed with a mild, benign arrhythmia.

What Happened and Why

Napoli said in a statement that the operation "was a complete success." McTominay will rest for around two weeks before resuming training. The irregular heart rhythm was identified after he was substituted in the 56th minute of Napoli's 2-1 home defeat to Como on 30 August. The club has described the condition as not serious, though it required surgical correction.

Matches He Will Miss

The timing is costly for both club and country. McTominay will sit out Napoli's Champions League opener against Arsenal on 9 September, along with domestic fixtures against Bologna and Fiorentina before the international break. If his recovery goes smoothly, he could be available again when Napoli host Frosinone on October 10.

Scotland will also feel his absence. McTominay will miss the Nations League fixtures against Slovenia twice, Switzerland, and North Macedonia, marking the start of Steven Pocognoli's tenure as national team manager without one of the squad's most influential players.

Central to Napoli, and Out of Contract Talks

McTominay has been central to Napoli's rise since joining from Manchester United in 2024, scoring 27 goals in 82 appearances and winning last season's Serie A Player of the Season award as Napoli claimed the Scudetto. His absence comes at an awkward moment, with Napoli picking up just three points from their opening three league games this season.

Contract talks are also ongoing. McTominay is signed through 2028, but sporting director Giovanni Manna said an extension has not yet been agreed. "Scott said he doesn't know if he'll renew at this time," Manna saidduring an interview with DAZN. "He has a two-year contract, we want to do it, and he wants to do it, too. It's not always easy to make things coincide, but we're trying."

For now, the focus is on recovery. Napoli's medical team will monitor McTominay closely over the coming fortnight before clearing him to return to full training.
