Germany v Hungary Prediction: Euro 2020 Match on 23.06.2021

Wednesday heralds the end of the Euro 2020 group stages, with the leading teams enjoying a brief break before turning their attention to the knockout stages. There will be no games played on Thursday and Friday, but the action resumes on Saturday with a doubleheader. Before getting into the next stage, there’s the little matter of Group F to settle. Portugal and France meet, but our team focuses on the other match from the pool as Germany prepare to play Hungary.

France starts the round as leaders of the group, but there’s little between the four teams, with each side having a chance to finish in pole position. Winning what has been dubbed the group of death would send a message of intent to the rest of the championship. Can Germany do that? To have any chance of progressing as group winners, they must take three points from this game and hope Portugal does them a favour by taking points from current leaders France. A big ask on both fronts, but Germany will be confident they have what it takes.

Germany and Hungary have met four times before on competitive action, and armchair fans will be interested to learn the pair have never produced a draw. Germany leads the head-to-head stats with three wins against the one of Hungary. The spare came in a friendly in 2004, but the Germans have won the last two, scoring a total of five goals and keeping a pair of clean sheets. Will that trend continue on Wednesday with Germany picking up three points and boosting their goal difference tally, or will Hungary pull off an upset?

Germany remain in the hunt

Germany starts this game second in the pile with three points on the board, scoring four but conceding three. They are just one point off leaders France but level with third-placed Portugal and two better than their opponents in fourth. A closer look at those stats tells us the Germans are the groups second-highest scorers, behind Portugal. They must continue that scoring streak against Hungary but know keeping the defence tight is just as important if they are to progress.

Germany enter this match knowing a draw would likely be enough to see them hold their position and finish second, and four points will also grant them passage to the next round. However, this a team that has made a habit of winning European Championships, and they won’t be here to go through the motions and play for a point simply. They will want to win this, do it with a few clear goals, and ask France questions. Take all three points, and they could still finish as champions of the pool, which will spur the players on.

They opened with a disappointing defeat to France, beaten 1-0 in a tight match. An own goal from Hummels on 20 minutes proved to be the difference on matchday one, but Germany did have chances to get level and will see that game as a point dropped. They started just as slow against Portugal, going 1-0 down to a Ronaldo go on 15 minutes but fired back in some style to go into the break with a lead. That match finished 4-2, half of Germany’s goals coming from OGs. Beating the holders and putting four goals past them would have done wonders for team morale ahead of a crucial 90 minutes.

Hungary aren’t out of it yet

It’s not often Hungary find themselves as the underdogs at a major international tournament. This is the team that once showed the world how to play modern football. But having been dropped into a pool with three previous winners, including the defending champions, that’s exactly how they began this tournament. It was billed as a three-horse racing between Germany, France and Portugal for the top two automatic places into the next round, but Hungary aren’t done yet.

They were poor in their first match when losing 3-0 against Portugal, but the final score flattered the champions just a little. All three goals were scored after 84 minutes in the match when it looked like the battling Hungarians might hold on for a point. They conceded late to Guerreiro with 84 on the clock before Ronaldo did what we have come to expect from him, putting the game to bed with a couple of late strikes to finish things off. It was about as poor a result as the fans could’ve feared, and it looked like things would only get worse when playing France in game two.

Hungary held Les Bleus to a draw, taking a point from a game they had chances to win. They stunned the French – pre-competition favourites to win the trophy ahead of England and Belgium – when snatching a lead in first-half stoppage time. Fiola found the net to give his nation an unlikely advantage, but Deschamps saw his men draw level thanks to an equaliser on 66 minutes. They now have just one point from a possible six, which leaves them bottom of the pot, but if Hungary can grab a win, they will go through. Anything other than three points sends them home.

Germany vs Hungary prediction

On paper, Germany is the stronger team and should win this match and push for the top spot. But Euro 2020 has already shown us games aren’t won and lost on paper. There’s real pressure on both teams, and that can do funny things to the players. The Germans know anything less than three points could cost them a place in the next round. Hungary knows they must win. It’s that simple. Anything other than all three points is the end for them after three matches.

This will be a fascinating match for the armchair fans to watch with both teams pressing for goals but knowing they can’t afford to take risks at the back. Germany and Hungary are capable of scoring goals, but they aren’t immune to making mistakes and conceding goals. Don’t take your eyes off this one. Even if one team races into a lead, the focus will be on the goal difference as well as the final result, so it will be entertaining up to the final whistle.
