Chelsea will reportedly splash £50M on Dortmund left-winger Jamie Gittens, according to The Guardian, a deal that is expected to be concluded before the start of the Club World Cup in mid-June. [banner][/banner]
The Sancho Problem
Chelsea continue to expand their projects as they remain active in the transfer window, despite criticisms regularly pointing out an excess in spending. There is, however, an argument to be made as to why this is a necessary transfer for Maresca’s project to progress and reach new heights in the coming season. The appearance of Jamie Gittens in Chelsea does not come out of the blue and is merely the consequence of the club’s discontent with another player, Jadon Sancho.
Grateful for the experience. Big love to everyone at Chelsea who made me feel at home — teammates, staff and the fans. Wishing the club all the best moving forward. Truly grateful, Thank you Blues 💙🙏🏼 pic.twitter.com/LFEpK5o7j8

The Man United reject arrived at the club on loan, as a result of the change of coaches, and Ruben Amorim refusing his services. However, he failed to impress at Chelsea too, where his lack of two-footedness has been a major weakness. As a result, the Blues may send him back to Manchester United, resulting in a vacated position in the left-wing role.
English Roots, Dortmund Growth
Jamie Gittens comes with many advantages, the first of which is that he knows the English environment. He broke onto the international stage as a Manchester City academy graduate, even spending some months in the youngest categories at Chelsea.

His dynamic profile but lack of development led him to Dortmund, where he made a name for himself as a dynamic winger. He became the youngest English player to score against Real Madrid, demonstrating his potential. Gitten boasts twelve goals and five assists in thirty-two games, as Dortmund’s most important forward in the 24/25 season.
What Gittens Brings
Gittens has progressed well in his Dortmund spell, attracting attention because of his pace as a winger, which he combines with an electric style of dribbling. It often allows him to either get past a player or tire out the opposition, which benefits him in both cases. Chelsea have needed dynamic players on the wings this season, as Sancho was more of a passer than a versatile outlet who can out-dribble the opposition. Gittens would be the alternative to Cole Palmer in playmaking.

The team have often relied on the Englishman’s quality, but have lacked diversity in the final third. This is the logic behind the addition, in the belief of accelerating Chelsea’s attack, which has mostly evolved in horizontal lines.
Champions League Pedigree
It should also be noted that Gittens’ Champions League record, whether against Real Madrid or other teams, proven he can do it on the biggest stage. Premier League fans have often raised concerns about how skills in the Bundesliga can’t be translated to the Premier League due to the difference in levels between the leagues.

There have been several examples of players struggling to adapt, including Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho. At the same time, both leagues are known for leaving spaces open and relying on explosive counterattacks.
The Development Challenge
On the other hand, Gittens would not arrive as an elite forward, as he still needs to be moulded according to Maresca’s needs. At the young age of twenty, he can take the path of a specialist dribbler, inside forward. Most of his focus remains on dribbling, which has translated into his neglecting other areas. Those include shooting accuracy in front of the goal and little defensive involvement.
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens will be one of the Best Left Wingers in the World, limited minutes yet only Doku and Yamal are better dribblers in Europe.
Shoots on both feet, creates chances, tracks back, Maresca will love him in this Chelsea system on the touchline. Unreal Baller. pic.twitter.com/SifUU7T7kj — Zeno (@CFCZeno) June 2, 2025
While the former may be forgotten, the lack of defensive actions may prove to be an issue in Maresca’s system. Most forwards can’t afford to lack intensity out of possession, unless their name is Lionel Messi. Gittens’ low productivity in front of the goal means he’ll probably have to put his defensive shift as well.
Vision Concerns
There is a lot of work to be done in possession, too. Despite beating his man and being a pacey forward, his assist statistics were hardly impressive. This may be related to the team’s performances, with Dortmund sacking coach Nuri Sahin mid-season. Even after the team improved in the second half of the term, his assist figures remained low. At times, it seems as if he lacks creativity and experiences ‘tunnel vision’, meaning he doesn't scan his surroundings before engaging with the ball enough.
Jamie Gittens is 20 years old - turns 21 in two months.
He has played 106 first team games for Dortmund and 23 CL games. He’s not this untested kid with no experience at top level. He’s got more CL experience than any of our wingers bar Sancho. pic.twitter.com/whpfqKaLk4 — The Score ⭐️⭐️ (@TheScore01) June 2, 2025
It can be argued that this is a mere adjustment Maresca’s staff could fix. Another could be linked to Gittens’ young age: young, dynamic dribblers often lack experience in decision-making, leading to poor judgment in tense moments.
Worth the Gamble?
Gittens may not be the most urgent need, but he would be a nice addition as he would diversify Chelsea’s source of playmaking. His youth and English background may allow him to adapt quickly to the Premier League, as long as his key flaws are addressed by the squad. Doubts should be raised whether the club really need to finalise the deal before the Club World Cup (CWC), as it would pressurise Gittens from the start of his Chelsea career.

On the other hand, it’s no secret that the club are after the CWC money, and the tournament starts soon, in about ten days. It’s unlikely for the club to find an alternative, as other candidates (such as Nico Williams) have already been ruled out due to expensive prices. Gittens might be considered a risky move due to his young age, but there are more upsides than downsides in this transfer. [banner_third][/banner_third]
