Chelsea have completed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a British record transfer between €137.5m and €138m. The England international was attracting interest from reigning Premier League champions Arsenal, but the Blues have swept in to seal the biggest deal of the summer window so far.

The rapid rise of Rogers

Having come through the youth ranks at West Bromwich Albion and later Manchester City, Rogers' career looked to be stalling following an unsuccessful loan spell at Blackpool in 2023. City allowed the young Englishman to leave that summer permanently for just over €137.5m, with Championship Middlesbrough his destination.

From that moment on, the attack-minded midfielder has not looked back. Five goals in Middlesbrough's run to the 2023/24 EFL Cup semi-finals helped grab the attention of Aston Villa boss Unai Emery. The Basque coach personally pushed for his signing in the winter transfer window, and the Birmingham club got their man for around €95m.

Under Emery, Rogers quickly blossomed into one of the best ball-carrying attacking midfielders in England. He registered 12 goals and 12 assists across Premier League and Champions League football in the 2024/25 season, while making his debut for the national team.

Rogers has since gone on to feature for the Three Lions at the World Cup, assisting in England's 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina only last week.

A transfer twist to shake up the Premier League

Despite Villa's qualification for the Champions League, the club's battle to comply with Financial Fair Play rules always meant a big sale was likely. As their most valuable asset, Rogers was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.

However, a huge twist in recent days has seen Chelsea beat the Gunners to the signature of the 23-year-old. The West London club were the first to match Villa's asking price, with the player's close friendship with Blues star Cole Palmer helping to clinch the deal.

On one level, this is a surprise move. Rogers has given up Champions League football to play for Chelsea, who finished six places and 13 points below the Villans last term. They were also 33 points behind champions Arsenal, missing out on European qualification altogether.

Despite that, the England international clearly believes in the project that Xabi Alonso is looking to build at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso's Chelsea revolution taking shape

While the price is high and their recent recruitment has often been poor, this could be a game-changing signing for Chelsea. They are getting an established Premier League star, who comes with a proven track record at the highest level.

His arrival could allow Alonso to field Rogers and Palmer as twin number 10s. The 44-year-old used a 3-4-2-1 system to great effect during his successful stint as Bayer Leverkusen boss. He may opt for a similar approach in London.

Alternatively, the versatile Rogers could be deployed on either flank in a 4-2-3-1 system. His ability to shoot from range should help ease the burden on Palmer, who struggled for form and fitness during the previous campaign.

Chelsea now have the attacking foundations in place to be a much more competitive force in the 2026/27 Premier League. They begin the new season with a local derby against Fulham on 24 August.
