RC Lens, runners-up in Ligue 1 last season behind PSG, have sacked head coach Dino Toppmöller after just six matches in charge across three competitions, barely three months into his tenure. The German becomes the first manager in Europe's top five leagues to lose his job this season, and the decision had little to do with results on the pitch.

A Trophy, a Comeback, and a Stuttering League Start

Toppmöller arrived in June on a two-year deal, replacing Pierre Sage, who left for Crystal Palace. His brief spell delivered genuine highlights: a win over PSG in the season-opening Trophée des Champions, and a dramatic 3-2 Champions League comeback at Slavia Praha, where Lens scored twice in the closing minutes after trailing 2-1 through goals from Florian Thauvin and Ruben Aguilar. Ligue 1 form was shakier, with Lens taking four points from their first four league games to sit 10th.

An Internal Dispute, Not a Results Crisis

The real trigger was a falling-out over Toppmöller's assistant, Nelson Morgado, a close confidant he has worked alongside since 2017, including at Eintracht Frankfurt. Club management came to view Morgado as a disruptive presence, with French reports citing his demands for higher standards of commitment from the coaching staff, and moved to dismiss him. Toppmöller refused to accept the decision and stood by his assistant, leading Lens to end both of their contracts.

In a statement, the club said the dismissal followed "numerous discussions focused on the squad, as well as the functioning and structure of the coaching staff," adding that the resulting "structural changes could not be embraced by Dino Toppmöller."

What Happens Next

Former Lens captain Yannick Cahuzac, one of Toppmöller's assistants, will take interim charge for the away match against Monaco on 18 September’s. Lens return to Champions League action on Tuesday 13 October, hosting Sporting CP at 18:45 CET. For now, the club that beat PSG to open its season finds itself searching for its second head coach before October even arrives.
