On September 17, the KHL board of directors was held in Moscow, which approved the distribution of the profits received by the league from the sale of television rights between the clubs, according to the league’s official website. More than 466.5 million rubles will be distributed in total. Despite the early completion of the championship, the association is pursuing a development strategy that provides an annual increase of payments to sports clubs.
The KHL launched the practice of distributing income from the sale of television rights between clubs in the 2014/2015 season. In the 2019/2020 season, the league sold television and betting rights to 34 broadcasting countries, including Russia. 1050 broadcasts were shown on 17 international TV channels, 888 broadcasts on regional TV channels, 58 broadcasts on the federal TV channel “Match TV”, 1387 broadcasts on KHL TV and KHL TV HD channels.
In total, 466,460,927 RUB were distributed among the clubs (incl. VAT), which is a record in the entire history of payments. Last season, 419,339,292 RUB were distributed between the clubs. The procedure for distribution of income from TV rights between clubs has changed in terms of the distribution of weights in a sporting principle in connection with the early completion of the championship.
The principles of distribution of participation in the championship (30%) and the principle of TV demand (40%) remained unchanged:
▪ 30% of the total amount is distributed among all 24 participants of the 2019/2020 season championship.
▪ 40% are distributed according to the TV demand principle—those clubs whose TV rights are selling more expensively received higher income.
Earlier, in a sporting principle, the weight of which was 30%, the distribution according to the results of the club’s performance in the championship was distributed to 15% of the playoff participants, 7.5% – for the first place in the playoffs, 3% – for the second place in the playoffs, 4 , 5% to the winner of the KHL regular championship.
Due to the early end of the championship, the KHL playoff finalists in the 2019/2020 season have not been determined. At the same time, the league approved the final table of the tournament.
In this regard, part of the income intended for the participants in the final series of the playoffs (43 million rubles) was distributed in equal shares between the eight clubs participating in the second round of the playoffs. Thus, the structure of the distribution of income according to the sports principle is as follows:
– 15% – to the participants of the playoffs,
– 10.5% – to clubs that reached the second round of the playoffs,
– 4.5% – to the winner of the KHL regular championship.
The clubs Ak Bars, Barys, Dynamo (Moscow), Jokerit, Salavat Yulaev, Sibir, SKA and CSKA, received 5 356 475 rubles each. The record amount of payments following the results of the championship will be received by Jokerit (50 671 937 rubles), where 36 388 004 rubles obtained thanks to the highest demand in the KHL for TV rights. Victory in the regular season made it possible for CSKA to receive 18 365 057 rubles and in total – 46 911 353 rubles. SKA closes the top three, the rights to broadcast the matches of which are in the greatest demand among Russian KHL clubs. This made it possible for SKA to earn RUB 8,369,166, and in total – RUB 27,183,719.
