Japan’s success on the football stage over the past year or so has been one of the biggest stories. However, they will be looking to maintain their charge by recording a friendly victory on Tuesday morning when they take on Colombia.
Few nations caught the imagination as much as Japan at the 2022 World Cup. The Asian country defied all expectations to finish top of Group E, which also included Germany and Spain. Japan recorded victories against both of their illustrious European rivals, before they were eventually knocked out of the tournament in heartbreaking fashion by Croatia in the round of 16.
Japan returned to action for the first time since the World Cup on Friday morning, as they clashed with Uruguay at the Japan National Stadium. The South Americans started the quicker of the two sides, and took the lead inside 40 minutes. However, as was their trait at the World Cup, Japan came battling back in the second period, and deservedly earned a draw following Takuma Nishimura’s effort with 15 minutes remaining.
There was certainly a lot of disappointment among Colombians last year, as they missed out on a place at the World Cup after finishing sixth in qualification. But, they have already shown early signs that they appear to have learned their lesson from last year.
Colombia comes into this international having gone four without defeat. However, each of their last two matches has ended in draws. The most recent of those came against South Korea last week. But, it was an excellent response by Colombia, as they battled back from 2-0 down to snatch a point. James Rodriguez scored the nation’s opening goal, before Jorge Carrascal levelled the scores in the 49th minute.
Colombia has won three of the previous five international matches between these sides. The most recent win for the South American nation was a 1-0 success in the Kirin Challenge Cup in 2019. Japan’s only previous win against Colombia came at the 2018 World Cup.
This should be an entertaining fixture between two sides that both look to create clear scoring opportunities. However, a chance will be taken on Colombia to maintain their excellent record against Japan by registering a 2-1 win.
