The magical story of Girona shows no signs of stopping in La Liga this term, as the club have extended their advantage at the top of the standings to three points. They could increase that lead on Monday evening when Deportivo Alaves are the visitors.
It has been a magical start to the season in La Liga, with much of that down to the success that is being achieved on-field by Girona. The Spanish side are the unlikely leaders in the Spanish top flight as we edge nearer to the half way stage. They have won an excellent 13 matches from their opening 16 this term, with their only defeat coming against Real Madrid.
However, their advantage at the summit was increased last weekend, as they pulled three points clear after Madrid dropped points against Real Betis. Girona’s recent form is excellent, winning four of their last five, and each of their previous two. Their most recent success was a historic win on the road against Barcelona last Sunday.
Alaves will be the latest visitors to Girona, attempting to bring the league leaders back down to earth. They come into this match after winning four times this term. However, they have suffered more defeats than any side currently sitting outside of the bottom three after losing on eight occasions already in 2023-24.
A second defeat in four in La Liga was inflicted last weekend, as they suffered a loss at home against Las Palmas. There wasn’t a lot wrong with their performance in that fixture, as they created no shortage of clear scoring opportunities. However, they very rarely looked like finding the net, despite registering five shots on target.
Alaves have won two of their previous four matches against Girona in La Liga since the start of 2017. Girona’s most recent success against their rivals was recorded at home in the Copa del Rey in December 2018.
Alaves may boast the better record in the previous clashes between these two sides, but it is Girona that comes into the fixture with the better overall form this season. Therefore, we will be siding with the home side to pick up maximum points to continue their excellent winning sequence in the Spanish top-flight.
