A reduced fixture list in the Premier League this weekend means that there are just two matches on Sunday. Aston Villa will be looking to move level on points with Liverpool at the top of the standings, but they will need to claim maximum points against a relegation-threatened Everton.
Aston Villa returns to Premier League action this weekend after booking their spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup following success against Middlesbrough last time out. The Villa have been enjoying an excellent 2023-24 campaign to this point, and they could boost their chances of finishing in a Champions League spot by landing maximum points on the road at Everton.
Villa endured a difficult festive period, winning just once in three Premier League outings. However, they at least got back in the win column in their previous match in the competition after securing a victory against Burnley in the dying stages. A second straight win on Sunday would see the West Midlands giants move level on points with Liverpool at the top of the league standings.
There will be pressure on Everton this weekend, as Sean Dyche’s side have got dragged back into the relegation scrap after losing each of their last three matches in the Premier League. That run of form means that they are just a point above the bottom three places, and they could give off on Sunday sitting in the relegation zone.
Everton were well below their usual high standards in their most recent fixture in the league, as they conceded three times in a 3-0 defeat on the road against Wolves. It was also the second game in which the Toffees had conceded at least three goals. That means that they have now allowed eight in their last three in the Premier League.
Villa’s league record against Everton could be hard to ignore this weekend, as they have won each of the last five and seven of the previous eight against their rivals. Everton haven’t recorded a home win against Villa since November 2015.
It looks hard to ignore Villa’s excellent record against Everton in the Premier League, and that could be damning for the Toffees chances on Sunday. Therefore, we will be siding with the away side landing maximum points on the road.
