England have lost five players to injury just days before their Nations League campaign begins. Cole Palmer tops the list, denying the Chelsea forward a chance to make his case to head coach Thomas Tuchel after missing the World Cup squad.

Five Withdrawals, Two Call-Ups

With five players withdrawing from the squad, Tuchel has brought in two replacements to bolster his options ahead of the Nations League opener. James Garner (Everton) and Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest) have both been called up and will now have the opportunity to make an impression during the international window. Garner provides another midfield option following Declan Rice's withdrawal, while Gibbs-White gives Tuchel additional creativity after Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, and Kobbie Mainoo all became unavailable. The pair will join an England squad preparing to face world champions Spain, Croatia, and the Czech Republic twice. The Football Association has not announced any further replacements at this stage, leaving Tuchel with two new additions to compensate for five withdrawals.

A Costly Blow for Palmer's Recall

The timing is particularly frustrating for Palmer. Tuchel had specifically said the Chelsea attacker would have a point to prove following his recall, given his high-profile absence from the World Cup squad that reached the semi-finals before losing to Argentina. Palmer had played every minute of Chelsea's 3-0 defeat at Brentford on 18 September, only to be withdrawn from the England squad days later.

The absences leave Tuchel light on both creativity and defensive cover heading into a demanding run of fixtures. Rice and Livramento leave Tuchel short of defensive cover, with Rice his usual anchor and Livramento a key option at right-back. Palmer, Rashford and Mainoo take most of the creativity out of the squad in one go. With Rashford and Mainoo also unavailable, Tuchel's attacking and midfield options have both been thinned out at a sensitive moment in England's build-up.

For now, the FA has indicated no further changes are planned. The initial list of 27 players has been reduced to 24. Attention now turns to how quickly Garner and Gibbs-White can settle into a squad missing several of its most recognisable names.
