African Football Stars Who Played in the UEFA Final

From club legends like Samuel Eto'o to modern global stars like Achraf Hakimi, African players have a rich history in the Champions League. Several not only appeared in UCL finals but also decided them with iconic performances that placed them on the UCL winners list: ucl winners

1. Samuel Eto’o

In 2006, Samuel Eto'o scored the equalising goal for Barcelona in the 76th minute of the 2006 UEFA Champions League final against Arsenal. In 2009, Eto'o opened the scoring in the 10th minute to set Barcelona on their way to winning the treble. The Cameroonian also appeared for Inter Milan’s UCL final clash against Bayern Munich, helping his side to victory. Having won three titles, the Cameroonian is the most decorated African in the competition's history.

2. Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba became an iconic Chelsea legend and the club’s talisman in big matches. The Ivory Coast captain delivered one of the most iconic final performances in 2012, scoring a late equaliser and the winning penalty in the shootout. However, this was not his first appearance in the final with Chelsea. In 2008, he went from hero to zero as he was dismissed, which meant he could not take part in the shootout that Manchester United won 6-5.

3. Achraf Hakimi

The Moroccan right-back and wing-back, Achraf Hakimi, recently won the 2025 Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain. He scored in the final to help his PSG side demolish Inter Milan 5-0, adding to the first UCL trophy he won with Real Madrid in the 2017/18 season.  ucl spotlight

4. Mohamed Salah

Making it to the CL final does not guarantee silverware. Mohamed Salah has featured in three UEFA Champions League finals, all for Liverpool. He played in 2018 (3-1 loss to Real Madrid) and 2019 (2-0 win against Tottenham, Salah scored the opening goal via a penalty). He also participated in the 2022 finals. Salah won the title once in 2019 and finished as a runner-up in 2018 and 2022 (1-0 loss against Real Madrid).

5. Sadio Mané

Sadio Mané has played in three UEFA Champions League finals, all with Liverpool FC. He featured in the 2018 (runner-up), 2019 (winner), and 2022 (runner-up) finals. The Senegalese helped Mohamed Salah and Liverpool to form one of the legendary attacks, alongside Roberto Firmino, in the Premier League and Europe, operating under Jürgen Klopp.

6. Abedi Pele

Abedi Pele is at the foundation of the relationship between African footballers and the UEFA Champions League. The Ghana maestro was a key architect of Marseille's 1993 triumph, the first victory for an African player in the modern CL era.  Pele provided the corner kick assist for Basile Boli’s winning goal in the 1-0 final against AC Milan. As a key attacking midfielder, the Ghanaian talisman helped the French side become the first club to win the rebranded UEFA Champions League.

7. Samuel Kuffour

After Achraf Hakimi, Samuel Kuffour is the second defender to make an appearance on this list. The Ghanaian centre-back appeared in two finals for Bayern Munich, suffering a heartbreaking loss in 1999 before finding redemption and the trophy in 2001.  Samuel Kuffour was a key part of the Bayern Munich team that lost 2-1 in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final to Manchester United. He played the full match in defence and wept on the pitch following the dramatic defeat. He also participated in Bayern Munich’s run that won the Champions League in 2001.

8. Bruce Grobbelaar

Before the UCL was the European Cup, which had an African imprint as well, in the form of Bruce Grobbelaar.  A true pioneer from Zimbabwe, Grobbelaar was the first African to win the European Cup in 1984. The Zimbabwean goalkeeper famous for his "spaghetti legs" penalty tactics helped defeat AS Roma in the 1984 final, which was the first European Cup decided by a shootout

9. Nwankwo Kanu

Before he was an Arsenal FC legend, Nwankwo Kanu was part of the legendary Ajax side that went on to win the Champions League.  The Nigerian won the CL with Ajax in the 1994/95 season. He was part of the young team that defeated AC Milan 1-0 in the 1995 final, becoming one of the youngest Champions League winners at 18 years and 296 days.

10. Riyad Mahrez

Algerian Riyad Mahrez collected two of the biggest winners' medals in football during his career. He helped Leicester win their first-ever Premier League title during the historic 2015-16 season. After moving to Manchester City, he became a vital part of the City squad that won their first-ever UEFA Champions League title in the 2022-23 season, completing a continental treble

African Players Who Appeared in But Never Won the Champions League Final

While many African players have celebrated at the final whistle, several elite players have experienced the heartbreak of losing a Champions League final without ever lifting the trophy later in their careers. These club legends played pivotal roles for their teams but fell just short of becoming UCL winners.

1. Hajry Redouane

Moroccan midfielder Hajry Redouane carried his nation’s hopes into the 1988 European Cup final with Benfica. After a tense stalemate, PSV Eindhoven triumphed on penalties, leaving Redouane heartbroken.

2. Emmanuel Adebayor

Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor was part of AS Monaco’s fairytale journey to the 2004 final. Facing José Mourinho’s Porto, Monaco fell 3–0, and Adebayor never again came so close to lifting the trophy, despite later spells at Arsenal and Real Madrid.

3. Emmanuel Eboué and Kolo Touré

Emmanuel Eboué, the energetic Ivorian full‑back, was instrumental in Arsenal’s run to the 2006 Champions League final, where his tireless defending helped the Gunners push Barcelona before falling 2-1.  Partnering him in defence was fellow Ivorian Kolo Touré, one of Arsenal’s famed “Invincibles,” whose commanding presence at centre-back anchored the team but ultimately could not secure the trophy.
