Real Madrid struggled but defeated Deportivo Alavés. The match took a turn when Mbappé was sent off for violent conduct shortly before half-time. This comes at a critical moment in the title race, as the Frenchman will miss the next two La Liga fixtures.
The good news is that Ancelotti’s son, David, confirmed in the post-game press conference that Dani Carvajal is ready to feature with the team on Wednesday.
Real Madrid lost to Arsenal 3-0 in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, caught off guard following a lack of precision in Ancelotti’s plans. The head coach has insisted on featuring all his main attackers (Bellingham, Mbappé, Vinicius, and Rodrygo), despite failures with this setup.
It’s been repeated criticism over the last two years, but Ancelotti has refused to change his formula.
The club dropped points in the La Liga title race with a 2-1 defeat to Valencia, losing to ‘Los Che’ for the first time in seventeen years. While Real Madrid still compete in all major competitions, the next two weeks could turn their season around.
Eduardo Camavinga is suspended. Ferland Mendy, Andriy Lunin, and Éder Militao remain sidelined with injuries.
Real Madrid predicted line-up vs Arsenal (4-2-3-1): Courtois; Alaba, Rüdiger, Asencio, Carvajal; Valverde, Tchouaméni; Vinicius, Bellingham, Rodrygo; Mbappé.
Key Player to Watch | Mbappé |
Team Strengths | Quality attackers, high-volume dribblers on both sides, strong in the last quarter of the matches, strong UCL culture |
Team Weaknesses | Lack of pressing coherence, lack of structure in possession |
Key injuries and suspensions. | Eduardo Camavinga (suspended), Ferland Mendy, Éder Militao, Andriy Lunin (doubtful) |
Arsenal rank second in the Premier League despite key season-ending injuries to Gabriel, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesús, and Takehiro Tomiyasu. Besides them, Ben White, Riccardo Calafiori, and Thomas Partey are doubtful as they’re still recovering.
Coached by Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s defensive system proved to be efficient in a 3-0 victory in London as Real Madrid could not pass through the compact block. The squad remains undefeated since late February, losing 0-1 to West Ham. Despite the success, fans demand more from Arteta due to the numerous draws this season, which total 12 in the Premier League.
Only two sides have drawn as many matches. Brighton (12) and Everton (14). This and the 1-1 draw with Brentford last weekend have resulted in fans labelling Arteta as “too defensive”.
One of the reasons why Arsenal have dominated possession but struggled to convert their chances is the overreliance on Martin Ødegaard to create opportunities in the final third.
Arsenal predicted line-up vs Real Madrid (4-3-3): Raya; Lewis-Skelly, Kiwior, Saliba, Tierney; Partey, Rice, Ødegaard; Martinelli, Merino, Saka.
Key Player to Watch | Declan Rice |
Team Strengths | Coordinated strategic plan, proven quality defense, strong mental resilience, unique style of play |
Team Weaknesses | Lack of proven scorers in the final third, lack of creative midfielders, key injuries across all three lines |
Key injuries and suspensions. | Ben White (doubtful), Gabriel, Gabriel Jesús, Kai Havertz, Riccardo Calafiori (Doubtful), Takehiro Tomiyasu, Thomas Partey (Doubtful) |
Although both clubs are known as giants across the continent, they met for the last time in 2005/2006 in the Champions League. Arsenal won the double-encounter thanks to a 1-0 win at the Bernabéu and defended their lead in a 0-0 draw in the second leg.
They met again last week, in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal. To the general surprise, Arsenal defeated Real 3-0 with the help of goals from Declan Rice and Mikel Merino. Rice’s score from a free-kick impressed, catching Madrid’s wall off-guard as he curled his shot.
Mbappé’s suspension for the next two La Liga games means he will focus his efforts on the Champions League instead. Without defenders, matching the Frenchman will be a challenge, especially with Daniel Carvajal’s announced return.
Mbappé will be expected to lead Madrid when it’s most needed, in the context of a 3-0 deficit. His pace makes him a unique player, difficult to track in one-on-one situations.
While Arsenal may not have a specific player in mind, Rice proved to be dangerous in dead-ball situations. He works as an interior, accompanied by Partey, who’s deployed as the deepest midfielder. Given the lack of dominance by Madrid in the midfield, the pairing could be key in keeping the lead.
Real have notoriously struggled to defend, due to a lack of pressing coherence. With Mbappé added to the mix, Ancelotti has had to deal with another attacker who lacks pressing intensity.
This has led to an unhealthy mix, where Madrid have fielded four attackers while lacking detail in the defense and the midfield. It’s not only a problem in general, but a major issue against Arsenal, who represent the opposite.
However, it would be unhealthy to talk about a UCL night without the Madrid effect, known for winning the most Champions Leagues. The team are famous for being emotional about this competition, and this contrasts with Arsenal, who have yet to win their first CL.
Bet hereAlthough Arsenal are favoured to pass to the next round, Real are known for their unique culture when it comes to the Champions League. The 3-0 struck the alarm and the city, and the comeback of Carvajal, confirmed by Ancelotti’s son, could change the encounter.
Madrid need an early lead, as they will face one of the best defensive teams of the competition. They can count on experience from the remaining veterans, while Arsenal are yet to win the contest. An early lead often leads to reluctance to attack, which can be a significant mistake at the Bernabéu.
Mbappé has been subject to criticism (especially through the red against Alavés), but he cannot be faulted when it comes to his performance in front of the goal. With Carvajal back on the pitch, he’ll have one more player to support him in the attack, freeing space for him in the final third. Besides Bellingham, he is the player fans trust the most. Now is the opportunity to prove them right.
